Econet sued over Internet shutdown in Zimbabwe

Lawyers and a media-advocacy group in Zimbabwe asked the High Court to declare the shutdown of the internet illegal after the government blocked access to most social-media services last week.

The shutdown has caused loss of business and income and threats to life, according to the urgent application filed Monday by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and the Zimbabwe unit of the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

^ in this case nothing changed, more of the same. And our government has said nothing about the human rights violations. Then there's the talk of helping to bail Zim out.

When you look at ZA's history of associating with countries that flagrantly abuse human rights, how can any rational person think that it will not happen here (sooner or later).

one wonders, if the EFF take over SA, if these thugs could (conceivably) shut down SA internet?

or is that too difficult with all the fibre cables landing locally?
