Wouldn't say good bye eskom cause if it's only 150Mw they'll need to supplement it from somewhere

Hell this is very surprising as the electric infrastructure is in such disrepair that parts of Kempton Park recently suffered prolonged outages (Days) and again last night till this morning! How about replacing the crappy infrastructure as well, this way the targeted users will get the benefit of the renewable energy.

Goodbye Eskom — Ekurhuleni signs 46 independent power producers

The City of Ekurhuleni will soon receive between 150 and 680 megawatts of additional power from renewable energy sources.

According to the municipality's annual report for 2020/21, it awarded 46 tenders to independent power producers (IPPs) to generate additional renewable energy for the city.

How were they able to push for this in 2017 while Cape Town's been trying to get the rights to source their own power for even longer than that? What am I missing?

I have a feeling a fair chunk of the details are being left out of this announcement...

They were still not able to source their own power in 2017 if that's what you are wondering , but I don't think there was anything stopping anyone from planning ahead since it was clear we were already heading towards this direction.

Five days without power was no joke, then again for a few hours this Friday past and another 18 hours last night. 2022 has been off to a BEAUTIFUL start.

So who would these 46 IPP's be? They are mentioning rooftop panels. Does this mean that a Property Company for example, with 5 rooftop installations would be considered an IPP?

I hope they have signed some SLA's with them.. Reliability, Day/Night time availability etc.

I read "tenders" and stopped reading.

This project will take 20 years and be 88 billion over budget. Good luck with that siht

Any municipality with their own sewage treatment plant can, for quite cheap, convert it into a biogas generator to supply electricity locally, or at least supplement the grid. Solar is only one cog in the wheel, same as Wind and Water.

Laat jou poephol die ekonomie bietjie help

Just too bad they don't want municipalities to be in charge of their own power generation, because if they were, they could very easily convert their sewage treatment plants to biogas producers who could in turn be sold to biogas electricity plants or even install their own.

CoCT was small scale then as they already had existing surge demand infrastructure in place for decades.
