Hi there ...
I will receive my 3G HSDPA data card any day now, and I'm looking for the proper PCMCIA - PCI adapter to buy for it ...
The guys at Vodashop said that I must be aware, that the new HSDPA cards, does NOT work on the P111 PCMCIA - PCI adapter ....
What card can I use? ... (I'm not looking at the USB adapters, cause at this point, they are toooo pricy for me) .... any ideas?

I have the Option Globetrotter at the moment and it also works fines in the ELAN P111 adaptor.
It is important to load the latest drivers from the ELAN website when installing the adapater. The CD which was supplied with the ELAN adaptor orginally was out of date and the drivers did not even work on my pc.
You have to register on the ELAN website, I think, and the download is about 7MB if I remember correctly.

But is the "Huawei E620" and the "Option Globetrotter" HSDPA cards? .... I thought the Globetrotter is a normal 3G card?

It does work, I got the same response from my vodashop, I was in the mood to prove them wrong. All you need is the updated drivers witch where e-mailed to me from 155 and lots of free time. I used the novatel merlin HSDPA card witch I returned to vodacom as there HSDPA service in Knysna is junk. PM me your e-mail if you need the drivers i may still have them someware.

My globetrotter is definitely HSDPA and works fine in the adaptor, the vodacom bill and speeds confirm this

I also have the ELAN adaptor in my PC and both the Globetrotter and Huawei HSDPA cards work fine - and I used the drivers from the included disk. The order of installation is critical though ... first the drivers then the adaptor.

The Option Globetrotter card that does HSDPA is the 3G+ or Nozomi (local name) not any of the other members of the Globetrotter range.

I have the ELAN 132 card and it works fine with a number of PC's. I have used it with the "Huawei E620" card. The drivers that were shipped worked 1st time.

My Elan U132 and Merlin U740 work together just fine and no installation issues getting them running either. Both very recent aquisitions.

Data-card adapters

I'm using a Huawei E620 (HSDPA) data-card in a Mecer PCI-bus-to-PCMCIA adapter, and it works fine. The adapter was purchased at "Incredibil Connection" (sic), and it is not supplied with, nor does it require, any additional drivers/software to operate with Windows XP. The price was R300.00 (Yes, that's a bit steep, but I was in a hurry to play).

The Mecer adapter is probably a re-branded product. One might also consider a PCI-PCMCIA adapter manufactured under the brand name "Chronos". This is also said to work fine, but I haven't tested it myself.

I had to swap the position of the PCI/PCMCIA adapter (relative to a TV-card) in the PCI bus area of the motherboard, before the BIOS accepted and assigned the resource correctly. Thereafter the Windows drivers installed (plug-and-play), and everything went fine.

Lastly, please note that the PC "locks-up" if one tries to insert the data-card into the PCI adapter while the PC is running. However, no damage was done. Thus, the adapter doesn't allow "hot-pluggable" access to the PCMCIA slot, and the data-card must be inserted when power is off.

PM me if you have any questions.

Regards,
panda
