Electric cars for less than R1 million in South Africa - April 2024

seriously though, in Australia they built this:

ripped out the ICE engine fuel tank and gearbox from a Getz, and simply rebuilt it as an EV,
seems like such a better idea, less wastage, especially when the ICE engine is old and not fuel efficient anymore.

sounds like an awesome idea actually, instead of making a NEW car, reuse OLD cars with better forms of propulsion.

All ugly stubby little things aren't they.. Actually horrific for the price.. And then what to do with it when the battery stops charging properly after a year or two (like cell phones)? Nope, I'll stick to my petrol car thanks.

Would be interesting if manufacturers created kits for their most popular models.

exactly my point, look at this, perfect example, plenty of Getz still driving around happily, even in ZA

if Hyundai had to say, lets bring out a kit with a company X in ZA, bring your Getz in,
remove Engine and Gearbox and fuel tank and put in a EV motor and batteries, yes, Car will be heavier, so fit better shocks/springs
but hey presto, another car saved and given a new purpose, especially if its just as a run around locally,

actually in AU they managed to get up to freeway speeds still.

perfect example of what can be done, if they actually decide to stop making Jesusmobiles like those Teslas.

Still too much. A few wooden boards, 4 wheels, steering, brakes, a couple of drills. Slap on a some leaf blowers for a turbo model.
Cheap weekend project.

Getz not your thing, then pick something else to electrify, plenty out there, and actually super simple.

this problem needs to still get solved, as Id wish removable batteries that can be switched out when the charge capacity declines, and you own the Car not the Battery pack,
that gets recycled or fixed up, and put in another EV.

it already exists in some EV scooters, that the pack was its own wheels and can be brought inside to charge.

You don't have to worry for 8 years.

The will need new tyres for the higher weight... Swap brakes for regen system.

I think the only thing you'd keep from the Getz is the old draggy metal shell??!

Nice hobby thing for a classic car. Not sensible for mass market.

Do they even exist?

Australia did it, and if you read the article I posted, Hyundai even honored the original warranty,
hell they even kept the original gearbox

still think its an awesome way to keep old cars, or even modern cars on the road.

$10,000... Before the car... Not sure it's worth it unless it's to keep a classic car (1. So you don't care about payback, 2. Safety not an issue... 3. Price not a biggy either)
