I've just noticed mine is around R1,000pm ... for a 2 bedroom townhouse with only myself living in it. There's no pool pump or anything ... does this seems right?! It sounds a little high for a single person!

I did notice Extended Package Social Grant, Network Charge and Service charge are at R350.00 before he electricity charge even starts counting though ...

My power high or is that what power actually costs? :/

We pay R700 per month for two people, aircon running as heater, servers on 24/7 (low power ones, granted) and many downlighters that suck plenty of juice.

My wife deals with the payments so I don't have the detail, but she says it totals to around 700 on an average month.

Sounds high. For my family of 4 with stay at home wife who loves cooking we pay R400 in summer and perhaps R700 in winter. If your bill is that high get yourself an OWL energy monitor and figure out what is chewing through the power.

That sounds high, also a townhouse where you get your bill from CoJ? Ours comes from our managing agent and we don't pay the service fees as it's divided among the units, but for two of us and a 1 1/2 year old we look at R400 at most.

If you use less than 2000kWh per month it's cheaper to be on prepaid because of their standing charges.

EDIT - Only 702kwh. What are the odds they get meter readings wrong?

They can get it wrong. Does it say estimated or actual on the bill? I used that amount and was staying alone. My geyser was the bad link (really cheap, not insulated well). Replaced that with solar and by bill fell by a big margin. Maybe invest in getting on of those cheap power meters at Builders. Also go check on your meter if it is currently more than what it says on the bill.

700 units for R1000 sounds about right. First 400 units you get for 82c a unit, next 200 is 73c a unit and then anything over 600 is 60c a unit. (rough figures R300 buys me 180 units after 600 units used)

Your calculations are way off.
Joburg works on increasing telescoping tariffs. Your first 500 kWh per month are somewhere around R1.05, the next 500 costs more, and then after that even more.

Check the wattage on each bulb. Mine were 50w each and I had about 50 in the house.... (220v though)

So the fact that they work through some kind of transformer makes no difference?
