Where are the protesters, burning tyres and blocked roads? They came out in force for Zuma... Oh I just answered my own question... They voted for Zuma and Co and now are forced to accept the outcome hence no protests etc

Consumers have not been paying the true cost of electricity - Eskom

We are at a stage where we are not recovering our efficient cost of electricity and we know there have been areas of inefficiency from an operation point of view and from a corruption point of view.
Hasha Tlhotlhalemaje, Regulations general manager - Eskom

Consumers have not been paying the true cost of electricity, just the efficient cost of electricity for many years which means they have been having a permanent discount.
Do they mean white electricity or black electricity? 'Cos we didn't have these problems with blackouts and escalating costs when wypipo was running Eskom to world-wide acclaim. In fact white electricity was so cheap we made special 20-30 year deals with aluminum companies to come build their smelters here, now they want us to pay more for black electricity when they can't keep the plants running, steal & corrupt what's left and can't even bring their R100billion over budget new plants fully online 5 years late.

Why do we have to pay more just because they can't do their jobs properly? Just look what a mess they did of guavamint, why do we have to suffer because of their idiocy?

If they had to allow this 20% hike I really think the country needs to stand together and riot against government/eskom.
Mostly peaceful riots of course.

Yup, those that protest, riot and burn tyres usually don't pay for electricity.
As they say... 20% more of nothing is still nothing.

Then what? Then nobody can complain that Eskom is running at a loss if they can’t make money.

The corruption from the past is the past and the money needs to now be recovered over legal channels i.e. the courts. This will take time.

So either we all pay to keep Eskom afloat through a tax hike or we all pay a little (lot) more for electricity as of 1. April. Unfortunately not an April fools joke.

Complaining won’t magically make Eskom profitable nor is it going to make coal/diesel/gas/pv/wind cheaper.

It’s critical infrastructure. It’s bigger than you and I. If Eskom needs 20% they will get it one way or another. Either through the tariff increase as they proposed or through some other tax. Rioting people won’t change the realities of an empty till when Eskom need to pay coal/diesel/gas/pv/wind power supplier or to do necessary upgrades/maintenance etc.

Eskom is too big to fail. No matter how many rioting people or off-grid proponents there are government will defend the power stations with tanks and soldiers if worst comes to worst because it’s critical infrastructure.

My only hope is that SA improves its rating and that Eskom can get some foreign loans essentially dampening the tariff increase for us. I don’t see it happening in the next 3 months though.

Ah ok. So we going to do the same dumb thing over and over and hope it goes right this time.

Don't get me wrong you make sense. And I do agree.
But sense is just not getting things done.

Time to cut electricity use by another 20.5% , Eskom will end up with exact same income and then request another 20-30% price increase.

How this government is allowing a monopoly to increase pricing above apparently inflation rate is bonkers.

Or perhaps Eskom is applying the real inflation rate adjustment at 20.5% , sad but true.

If u are in city of cape town they will come for an audit of ur connection and then send u a notice saying u owe them money because they found tampering on the meter with no proof.

Eskom has been shielding us from a 9000% tariff increase. A good ANC story to tell.

Not on prepaid.

I am just saying I will reduce my electricity cost by 20.5% by only cooking food once a month.

By the time City of Cape Town come to check the meter usage I will be skin and bones, good feels!

Rather spend some money now on a new fridge if you haven’t replaced it in the last 5-10 years. The fridge will pay for itself much faster through the cost savings of the higher tariff. You have to cool your food one way or another even if it only cook it once a month ;). Rather do it cheaply because your fridge runs all day all year
