South African electricity price war looming

Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa described the passing of the Electricity Regulation Amendment (ERA) Bill as revolutionary, adding that it will hopefully kick off an electricity price war in South Africa.

Speaking to SABC News, the minister said it could mark the end of "extraordinary" tariff price increases in the country.

The problem is that Eskom will remain responsible for the transmission lines.
They are required to install something like 1600km per year. They are currently achieving 100km!
So new producers cannot get access to the grid
So we are stuffed

Transmission lines are so 20th century. Install solar and use the distribution lines.

All these bright ideas when SA is in a deep hole.

Why did they not do anything 20 years ago. That was the time to plan.

As usual the idiotic ANC is way to late to the party.

What price war?

Eskom still isn't breaking even at the prices its charging... if anyone comes in cheaper then Eskom is fscked.

Everything nowadays is 'Revolutionary".

I don't think that these uneducated Paras know what that word means.

I wonder how this will work?

Lets compare to Openserve fibre accounts with Afrihost and WebAfrica. What will stop everyone from using the cheapest (WebAfrica, who has very bad customer service)? Supply and demand will make the cheapest price go up? Will there actually be service differentiation?

Just points I am pondering.

price war mmmmmmm
eskom anc ran vs private electricity providers ( most likely owned by minister )
or do they mean Motsepe's african rainbow energy that is very anc connected.

so will the war be the tax payer vs the anc created monopoly ?

Basically tax payers will fund Eskom bailouts, but buy electricity from cheaper IPPs.
