South Africa’s new electricity plan — including price hikes when Eskom’s grid struggles and a 10-year price forecast

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy this week published the Electricity Pricing Policy Review for public comment, following approval by President Cyril Ramaphosa's cabinet.

The 124-page document outlines the government's approach to determining electricity tariffs in South Africa in light of the generation market being opened up to private power generators in the coming years.

If the system is struggling you cant "unstruggle" it if the tariff is increased so this sounds more like them trying to steal more from users when they feel like it than actually having supply problems.

Are they simply assuming that the price hike on high load periods will be so high that no one will pay it and thus the load will be reduced ? That is a ridiculous assumption.

It is simple, either the supply is constraint or it is not and when it is constraint you have to reduce load no matter the apparent price hike they might come up with.

Peak electricity charge is a global methodology, it will force more people to gas cooking and heating. Like what happened in Texas last year, when there is a supply issue the prices go up, the gov needs to address our chronic shortage of LPG and lack of natural gas infrastructure.

That's all great, but local municipalities must stop profiting off electricity sales or they will still be local monopolies, most economic activities happen in our metros, most people also live in metros, none of us will have a choice as to where we buy our power and to pay to not be load shed.

The poor will suffer.

I can afford to buy energy efficient appliances and take some of my usage off grid.

The poor can't.

Genuine (and also rhetorical) question : does anybody who deem themselves relevant really know what they are doing?

The policy states that electricity tariffs should reach cost-reflectivity within five years of coming into effect, except for specific tariff categories that will be cross-subsidised, such as those for disadvantaged households.
Does cost-reflectivity factor in the cost of Eskom's corruption, like for example those R250k brooms, and should we be paying for their corruption?

So simple answers would be yes it does factor in those costs, and no we shouldn't be paying for their corruption.
