I find Elephants amazing and mysterious creatures! I found this story incredible!

For 12 hours the huge beasts slowly made their way through the Zululand bush until they reached the house of the man they loved – to say good-bye.

That, according to the son of conservationist and adventurer Lawrence Anthony, who passed away while on a business trip to Johannesburg last Friday, was the profoundly moving sight at Thula Thula Private Reserve this week.

Dubbed ‘the elephant whisperer’ for his unique ability to calm traumatised elephants and herds, Anthony became a legend when it came to light that he had rescued animals from the Baghdad Zoo during the Iraqi invasion.

There are two elephant herds at Thula Thula. According to his son Dylan, both herds arrived at the house after Anthony’s death.

“They had not visited the house for a year-and-a-half and it must have taken them about 12 hours to make the journey,” said Dylan.

The first herd arrived on Sunday and the second herd, a day later.

‘They all hung around for about two days before making their way back into the bush,” said Dylan.

Yesterday family and close friends gathered at Thula Thula for a private memorial service, following a public service held at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Thursday.

Anthony, in a collaboration with his brother-in-law, former Durban journalist Graham Spence, wrote the book “Babylon’s Ark”, which details his unorthodox rescue of animals from Baghdad Zoo.

The pair also co-authored “The Elephant Whisperer”, which tells of Anthony’s techniques in communicating with elephants.

Having been at the frontline in the war against rhino poaching in Africa, when he died Anthony was in the process of launching a third book (also co-authored with Spence), “The Last Rhinos”, which tells of his exploits deep in the Congo jungle.

Interesting comment from an IOL reader:

Man, who knows. But elephants have often been shown to be aware of things that humans had no idea how they could know that. They are very social, very intelligent, very loving, and suffer grief, depression, etc., just like humans. Hindus in India believe the elephant is the last reincarnation before being reincarnated into a human, and say that 'elephants are not animals' they are like us. Elephants are one of the only creatures on earth (maybe the only) who take as long to 'grow up' as humans do. Years and years. The longer it takes a youth to develop into an adult is usually a sign of intelligence in most living things. Elephants also live as long as humans. During the Tsunami in Indonesia the elephants that were very far inland started going nuts, pulling at their leg chains. No human understood what was happening, but when the elephants would break lose they would pick up their 'owners' and run off with them. They saved many humans without being controlled or instructed to. Elephants would go down into ditches of fast moving water filled with people who were washed away & pull them to safety. Elephants ARE AWESOME !!!!

That is a beautiful story :crying:

It is just so sad that we do not treat them like they (and all animals) deserve to be treated.

We need more men/women to Love / Respect animals

It's now widely accepted that elephants can pick up the minute seismic activity through their feet and instinctively know how to interpret and escape these sorts of events...

Really amazing. What interests me, is that we as humans often accept as fact, that we are the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Often leading us to believe that we are the most evolved as well.
What we often forget, is that every creature on the planet is just as evolved as we are. Our evolutionary path simply took a different route. All we can do is say that we are more intelligent by our own standards and understanding of intelligence. But in so many evolutionary areas, we are like bacterial scum when compared to some other animals.

The fact that we dont fully understand some of these animal behaviors, simply shows that in their own way, they are more evolved than we are. Because we cannot link this behavior to anything we can relate to in ourselves.

There's also the elephants that mill around the old bones of one of their death on their treks every time they come across them.
