Yes thanks, have been reading that, but my question relates to the included battery and whether it's capacity would be sufficient. The thread you posted only discusses the physical (diy) inverter.

iirc one or two folks there bemoaned the quality of the batteries that you get with the unit.

They mentioned the ones supplied by Makro are bad, but no mention of the ones supplied by Ellies themselves, unless that's one and the same.

Assuming some conservative numbers:

TV+DSTV = 150W+50W = 200W
Battery = 100Ah (not specified on the Dion site, so typical size assumed)

Load on battery when in inverter mode - 200W at 12V at 80% efficiency = 21A

Full discharge = 100Ah/21A = 4.8 hours

However, you don't want to discharge a deep cycle battery more than 50% if you want a reasonable life out of it, so this would limit the runtime to max 2.5 hours to be safe.

The specs do not mention that it is a pure sine wave inverter, so it is most likely a modified sine wave one. I bought a pure sine wave Luminous 600W UPS and stand alone battery from Communica in Midrand. Not sure if they are in Cape Town.

To be honest , that price is way too high.

I paid R4600 for 2 x 102ah batteries and an inverter. (ok, it was the Mecer 2400VA one, but it works :) )

I did post this earlier...Dan in East London should find this interesting....Raylite are selling plenty of the Excis battery range. They warn and give guidelines. They are playing the ball. And that is the whole thing. Not false promises like many..

I phoned Battery Center this morning and they sell the 102 AH Silver Calcium Deep Cycle batteries for R1635
If you have an old casing the battery is R1464.
The 600 watt Ellies inverter from Makro is R2599 + R1635 for the battery comes to R4234, a far cry from R6000.
That's the way I'm going to go.

You would also have to factor in a decent battery charger!
