Elon Musk hopes to open Tesla store in South Africa in 2019

Hope it happens - and about time too

Core Group SA: Mr. Musk, maybe we can make a deal?

Are there any service stations along our highways that cater for electric cars?

Well, they won't be ewc'd... no electricity to charge me:ROFL:

Check Jaguar’s network.

However I don’t know if they’ll play open cards.

Tesla would put in their own infrastructure if they do come here.

Jirre fok that tweet doesn’t even have South Africa in it.

Entire thing is based on assumption and Elon actually getting what he meant.

That being said I know a few people paid deposits for Model 3’s and have been kept in the loop that it is definitely coming.

A 60 kW fast charger which has been installed at the Bergview rest stop in Harrismith.
According to https://www.cars.co.za/motoring_news/jaguar-i-pace-drives-from-jhb-to-durban/45609/
The Harrismith charger forms part of the Jaguar Powerway network which boasts 82 new chargers for all electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the major cities and along popular highways. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein will soon be linked up for electric cars to travel on. The N3 from Jhb to Durban, for example, will receive another 3 chargers by the time the Jaguar I-Pace officially launches in the first quarter of 2019. Jaguar's R30 million investment will mean 30 fast chargers placed at every Jaguar Land Rover dealership, 30 at various shopping centres nationwide and 22 along the N1, N2 and N3 motorways.
Additionally electric car's can charge at any electric plug - like at home - so technically every home, hotel, shopping center is a charge center.

Was researching the Hyundai Kona Electric.
Has a range of 256 miles (410km), which is enuf for me.
Uses 1kWh per 8.2km or 0.122kWh per km. 100km will use 12.12kWh
At a rate of R1.50 per kWh -> R18.30 per 100km
Much cheaper than petrol which is R15.01/l at the moment.
Equivalent petrol consumption of 1.2l/100km.

See here for a info on Kona

Yes, I know you can charge it anywhere.

I was under the impression, however, that service stations in places like the UK have special 'fast charging' facilities since you can hardly stand around waiting for six hours at a service station.

This could do wonders for Eskom if we had a significant number of cars charging during off-peak hours say between 10pm and 4am.

Wait until petrol attendants start striking because of EVs taking over

Yup everywhere along the roads. Tesla calls them "Supercharger" stations in the US. In South Africa they are called lamp posts.

Here is our local version.
