Elon Musk: South Africa’s billionaire space explorer and inventor

Why should we celebrate him if he is not keen to celebrate his South African heritage, thats the problem with South africans we get cheap ass sell outs like musk instead of true patriots. To much negativity and too few people actually sticking around to not just better themselves but also the country.

Musk is a sellout that contributed nothing to this country and we should stop this idea of media reporting him as proudly south african because he is not proudly south african.Lets just get this clear I'm not debating his success merely his loyalty to this country.

People like mark shuttleworth however do try and they should be respected for that.I take my hat of to him for trying with programs like hip2be square etc...and he is proudly South African.

I'm glad he is not in this country. Don't wanna read in the papers how some tsotsi killed him for a cellphone. He does not need to contribute to this country, he is contributing to the world and human kind.

Heres a prime example of how not to be
South africans are simply pathetic when it comes to being patriotic and this comment just proves my point.

Lol. Why should I be patriotic to a country that is simply trying to use me as a milk cow? If he where here he would be used as an example of the "EVIL RICH WHITE PERSON" regardless of how he made if fortune.

He is doing awesome things and I salute him. I will buy the new tesla if I can afford it when it becomes available to the man in the street.

This guy is a living legend! Bigger than any of our politicians could ever hope to be! Perhaps not perceived as such, but he is! LEGEND!!!

oh balls! Musk can't do any of what he does in South Africa because this ****ry does not support that kind of endeavour. Where is SA's space program - it does not exist. SpaceX has multi-billion dollar contracts with NASA to re-supply the ISS. SpaceX could never be built in SA.

Ditto for PayPal. Our financial regs only recently permits a half arsed use of paypal.

Ditto for electric vehicles. California has already rolled out electric recharging points which are free of charge. Do you see SA offering free electricity to electric vehicles?

No, SA is backward, corrupt and avaricious. There is no ability to develop cutting edge tech in this ****ry.

I don't require any patriotism from Musk since I myself possess ZERO PATRIOTISM. SA sux completely. The only reason I remain in this ****ry is because I live in Cape Town, which is a beautiful city. But if I lived in any other part of this **** hole, I would be out of this dump.

Ironically he left because of the Nats, so nobody can blame the current state of SA for his emigration. Not I'm defending the ANC, just pointing out facts.

Precisely, but I also don't seem him as being South African anymore.. yes he was born here but he has adopted the US as his country, lock stock and barrel.

Ditto. Saffers should stop with this loser/chump mentality of riding other people's coattails and worshiping them just because they happened to be born here even though they barely mention the country at all. Try to make something of yourself instead and give those who stayed and are trying to improve the country a big hand.

The worst example is Roger Federer, calling him "South African" and lauding him in the SA media just because his mother was born here? Seriously?

Seriously something like 60% of white people here would denounce their SA citizenship if they had the chance to.

You might be surprised on that one.

Actually, if anything, its the people who have the opportunity to have other countries citizenship who I've found to be the most vehemently South African.

Firstly I am not a supporter of the ANC, they corrupt arses, and respect for what they did in 1994 (Mandela etc) and for the struggle to give all people freedom and equality but they now abused it so i believe they must go as they there for themselves and for their pockets screwing the common man on the street.

But remember South Africa is not the ANC they are just controlling it. So to all the people that think this country (remove the ANC out of it) is crap is completely NUTS! We not the States or the UK. We've only been back in the international arena for about 20+- years. What we did in that period was alot for the resources that we have and the **** that the ANC is putting us through by means of corruption we could of had more.

Anyway Travel the world you will see stuff and be happy you live here. Lets look at it in Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Burma, North Korea, even China to an extent) Yes some of these places have good economies, cultured people who dont kill for a wallet. but their living standards are worse than here. I been to vietnam its a complete dump no offence. Polluted, people wearnig torn clothes. Half of the country 30 years ago was bombed left right and centre.

Yes they have fast internet speeds, but they do not have what we have a quality of life that similar to standard of Aussie, UK, The States and some developed countries. Practically most of Asia, South America, Africa are all bush! People those places dont even get paid enough to work they have to go work elsewhere overseas in spain etc. How many South Africans do we know work overseas as maids? domestic workers etc? They all work here, we only find the qualified professionals leaving. Yet in Asia, South America, you find the poor lower classes leaving the country for better pastures.

In essence we should be grateful to what we have. Crime is everywhere(here though senseless crime) some countries are in war. Some people are more homeless than here. If you visit some of these places overseas you will see. If you ask alot of tourists who come to South Africa alot of them will be shocked at how developed the country is.

If you remove Crime, Corruption what dont we have? In terms of luxury? We got big shopping malls, every 2nd person here got a smart phone, majority of the middle class live in spacious homes. Overseas to buy a house is impossible because it is so expensive over here it nothing. Hence they rent more around the world.

Anyways coming to the topic on hand, I believe every person owes Allegiance to their Creed, Beliefs, Family, Country they were born in. Why? Everyone sitting here reading this forum owes the fact that they can read , write, speak proper english to a South African School, University or some sort of thing. Hell UCT is internationally Recognized! Alot of things in SA are internationally recognized. We are part of the G20 and BRIC for a reason.

Anyway this guy is basically spitting in every South Africans Face. He did not give back or even consider doing something for the country he was born in, put race aside i believe if you made a success and dont give back to the community you grew up with then that says alot about the person especially since the community that you choose to leave is in a bad state. He with his knowledge and business sense could of left and stayed elsewhere but do something atleast one thing that could help the people in this country.

As someone mentioned even Mark Shuttleworth even though he left he is still proudly is South African, it just made business sense for him to leave yet he still has his many organizations in this country that are used to help his fellow South African.

Yet you got this guy who could not even do anything yet send people to Space. And mention his proudly American and NOT South African.

The worst part is and ive seen it happen, when **** hits the fan in all these countries the people that left South Africa will come running back. Anyway this man wants to see a person in Mars. Excellent idea, but to make it seem like a South African when the guy dont even care that he is South African instead having passion for the States? You making South Africans seem desperate to want to cling to people who dont care about South Africa. Which is an insult.

Anyway I muddled up and jumped from point to point but hope you people get my point:) The guy a sellout, there are more worthy people of praise who will gladly be proudly South African and embrace their heritage yet still be successful and live elsewhere. Just his not one of them.

So dont glorify him as a South African instead respect him as a person for what he has accomplished which is remarkable and what he wants to do for mankind by putting us on Mars (which we may not even be able to afford or be dead by the time we can afford it)

This, 1000000000000%.

I find it laughable that SAfricans praise him when he has practically NO CONCERN WHATSOEVER for this country. He doesn't even acknowledge it.

It's hilarious.

And you're right, Mark Shuttleworth is a far better icon. He deserves his praise from SAfricans.

Exactly. I find that MyBB members are the biggest pessimists.

This only serves to further prove your point:

You hit the nail on the head.

Fact is, if he'd stayed in SA, he wouldn't be where he is today.
Good for him. Well done on reaching for the sky and making it!
