emule (edonkey) and ports

I got sick of trying to get files via bittorrent - it just plain doesn't work for me anymore, with max d/l of 4k per second - the upstream beats my downstream [xx(]

So, I decided to give emule a try.

Ok, first thing, after installing, it has the option to "test ports" to see if people can connect to me - great stuff. I configure my smoothwall firewall to allow the specific emule ports and do the test - nope, can't connect to me via TCPIP - "TCP test failed! UDP test will not be performed."

Hmmm, ok, lets do some more meddling with the firewall - nope, nothing. Ok, turn off zonealarm - nada.

Haul out old USB cable and hook modem direct to PC, with Zonealarm off (just for a second mind you) - "TCP test failed! UDP test will not be performed."

So what gives ? Is this normal for emule ? Is this Sentech blocking those specific ports ?

Can a network savvy person verify if ports are being blocked by Sentech, or is it just me being daft ?

The port test in emule opens a web browser. They then test against the transparent proxy instead of your IP. Just connect to a server and see if you get a "High ID" or a "Low ID"
Low ID means your ports are closed or not mapped to your PC if you're behind something like smoothwall.

It's not a question of being daft. :) I run edonkey through smoothwall as well and you do sometimes get a high or low ID on the same setup. The only solution for a low ID, assuming your ports are not blocked, is to disconnect sentech and reconnect again. If your ports are set OK then you will see "reachable" at the bottom of the edonkey screen. I'm not sure if emule has the same display.

As for the speed ... sometimes screaming fast and sometimes snail slow. Depends on the files your looking for.

Not sure what everyone else is using, but I'm using Kazaalite. Works fine for me, downloads and uploads.

Please mommy make the bad man stop. (Bad Man = Sentech)

The eMule test always fail for me, but I (just about) always have HighID. Forget about the post and just have fun - make sure the files you download have loads of sources or that you download enough files at once that you are downloading from a high potential of sources. For a week now, I'm getting 16k while finding browsing easy. Still half of what it used to be in the beginning of the year, but it does actually do something ;-)

I found pretty much the same for the last period. Pity we are not allowed to enjoy the service now that it is finally working.

The testing of ports fail for me too, but who cares because downloading still goes.. but very slow (4-5k speeds) :/ It used to be in the 20k zones but sentech have been doing "improvement upgrades blah blah BS" so..
Anyway i always seem to have high ID for servers and KAD.. but does anyone know of a local server because those int ones seem very unstable, jumping from 400ping to 1200.. that sux
Any servers that u guys can recommend?
