the USG and pFsense are not all that different, actually. Just a linux (or bsd) based minimalist OS, with some IP firewalling and routing modules enabled, plus some management stuff.

Some of the security stuff needs to be done "manually" through the json config files as the GUI doesn't implement them yet, but that aside, it's fully functional.
I use OpenVPN on mine for remote access. Works like a charm.

I can manage the Unifi controller from anywhere via the cloud key and unifi client on my phone/ipad.

Ahh that is what I thought. Currently I temaviewer into the "server" on which the controller software is. not the best setup.
