Disappointed about the mini collapse, but still our day I think

Definitely belongs to SA despite the collapse after Tea. Comfortably won sessions 1 & 2. Session 3 may be shared although I'd edge it to the Saffers for their achievement through the last hour. TB and QDK steadied the innings, which was critical, and then found the boundary often enough to keep the runs coming and frustrate the English.

Kudos to the team for their success through day 1. More of the same today please.

We need to somehow bat past 400 and take it to Tea. However I fear if we lose on of these two we could collapse quite quickly and be rolled for 350 which will be a poor score and have the English under no pressure on what's still a good pitch and will be for the next 2 days at least.

Defintely need a good score here as batting second is apparently the way to go. Out of the last 17 test matches that have had a result, 10 of them were by the team chasing. I wonder if AB knew that at the toss...

Those 10 were by us against mostly Asian sides who perform badly on bouncy tracks.

If TB and QdK can score centuries each, and then accelerate, that would be perfect and get them in before tea

I suppose the 2 quick wickets may give QDK some license if can get the strike?

Q by commentators, what strategy should QDK be taking. Difficult.

Abbot is a player who can hang around a Gillespie type if you like. So fine with qdk has done so far. He will be more aggressive with piedt and morkel.

Having seen KA so far, I am sure this will be the polciy. Kyle like any decent lower order batsman, will play and miss at the odd ball outside off.

Edit: Saying that and ... Pfft!!!

The calamity between 'keeper and first slip will hurt. Scoring a boundary and losing a chance at a wicket will be killing Woakes. For QDK, team and country ... :D

QdK is looking really nice today...he could become top 6 material in a couple years. If he's up to the workload and he continues to improve his shot selection, could open up a slot for another bowler or batsman.

Well done, Dane Piedt.

Between Rabada, Abbott and Piedt, there is enough technique to work with to develop them into a stronger tail. This is also where a batting coach can help.

Well done, Dane Piedt.

I second the above ^ stated comment(s). Even though he hasn't looked remotely bullet proof, Piedt has done enough to allow another frustrating partnership to grow. That final ball before lunch looked helluva close at first look - whattaleave!

QDK is also up to his best in tests now. 85*

QDK could become what Mark Boucher was to the team in years gone. I was mulling this over last night. While he may not be the same talent as keeper as Bouch was, he might well score more runs in his time. As he matures, I am sure the odd rash stroke will reduce too.

Great session that. Honours even? The 3 wickets may swing it to the Poms?
