I must say, when Alistair Cook called Bairstow and Ali off on day 2 with more than 600 on the board, I never imagined that we'd end up two behind. Sure, I figured on this deck at least one batsman would score some runs, but this was great to watch. We were never batting to win the game but hopefully our batsmen have their confidence back now.

Superb stuff from Themba Bavuma. Didn't see much of it, but it looks like it was a superb and classy knock.

Three wickets before the close and you never know... ;)

Well done to Morris.

His debut effort reminds me of Abul Hasan of Bangladesh who got a 100 form #10 against West Indies...but Bangladesh still lost by 10 wickets.

Not-so-subtly diminishing the achievement of a player who doesn't fit your agenda with this random comparison? Classy.

You can be quite the tiresome little troll.

Good strategy declaring before the close - though not bearing fruit yet.

I think Morris's shot was because of knowing we will declare with 25minutes to go. Personally I would have batted another half an hour tomorrow morning with say a 75 run lead. But then again, we could have taken a wicket or two tonight. Just think the England bowlers probably were the first to thank Amla for declaring.

There's nothing on offer out there for the bowlers. That said, we were a bit short and a bit too straight...decent but no more than that.

Roll on Jo'burg.

Our no-balls are going to cost us.

We bowled 39 extras in 125.5 overs, while England bowled 26 in 211 overs.
If we were pushed to 211 overs of fielding, we would have bowled well over 50 extras.

Lol, it was very short of a length and wide of the stumps...he was annoyed at the dropped chance.

If he was trying to scuff up the pitch, he has no idea of a spinner's line and length.

Looked deliberate and he's no Messi so he missed.
Definite fine there.

Nice ton for Bavuma. We should not have declared though. Now we must run around in the sun tomorrow. No way we'll see 10 sticks in one day on this pitch.

It was not a bad declaration IMO. If Steyn was there we may have picked up 2 quick wickets.

I've seen a lot of talk on this thread about how taxing it is physically to stand in the field all day in this heat.

Maybe this deserves a new thread, but aren't these professional athletes at the end of the day? And I really mean "stand" in the field. The bowlers seem to run a bit and now and again a random fielder chases a ball, but if this is your career, don't you train to do it?

Edit: and in all my years watching this sport, I've never heard a player in an interview citing the above reason as mitigation for a poor performance. I've only heard commentators and armchair warriors calling it.
In my years as a professional sportsman, I and my team-mates never would have thought of pulling this line.

Declaration means England are now forced to make a game of it otherwise umps will call it at tea.
No way they going to allow England to bat the whole day tomorrow.

Same if we continued tomorrow.

It is taxing to bowl and field all day but I also fully agree with you that it is their job and that they should be fit enough to handle it. But I must add that it must be within reason... you cannot expect a pace bowler to bowl 40 overs in a day; it ain't gonna happen!

Been there, done that...
