QdK: Hey, Ben - how's your mother? Is she doing anything later?
Ben Stokes: Don't think so, mate.
QdK: Oh cool, can she drive you over to my place for a play-date?

He discussed his state of mind with the coach and some senior players two weeks ago. He told them that he was considering standing down after the second test. It was too close to the first test and the 2 days between the tests was not a good time to make his decision.

So not a shock decision. Good.

Only every interview he's ever done...

Oh, and also he's a damn sight better than than someone like that misogynistic Gayle in an interview any second of the day.

edit: Not that it's a direct or fair comparison, but the game needs to move with the times.

Dunno who else will take the gloves, and everyone keeps talking about long term. Who else is there? Bavuma? His batting will crumble if he is the cap'n.

And more importantly, during this rebuilding (I don't like the word transition in this context) QdK can play and captain all three formats, which is what this team needs now.

I'm putting my money on Elgar long-term....he's captained at various levels (SA under 19, SA A, provincial) and from his batting, you can see grit \ determination.

Two reservations - I haven't watched too many Titans games so I can't tell if he's actually a good captain and he hasn't played enough games at this level yet. But I think he's a solid possibility.

That's a fair contender. And a hell of a lot better than AB or faf.

Also I'm against a so-called stop-gap captain. The selection morons need to make a decision and stick with it for the next ten years kind of thing.

Emotion in an interview I don't mind. In fact it's refreshing to see. Not some mindless robot. It's how someone does in the field that is at stake here?

Not sure if you understand what constitutes captaincy material mate. Every good leader needs a strong personality, someone with a thick skin, and an ability to get people to follow them. QdK has none of these traits. It's not just about on-field tactics. Take a look at Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Clive Lloyd, Graeme Smith and even all the way back to Bradman. For these guys, failure is not an option, nor would they tolerate any crap...

Well put. Question is if AB is the same level? I think so but we need to see more prove.

I know what a leader is. And you don't have to be a bully style one to be a good one.
I say that as you seem to select a particular style of captaincy, which isn't the only one that works. May I offer Michael Clarke as an example?

Quit avoiding the issue via insinuations about me. Amla's removing himself frpm slip and fielding where captains almost never do, plus changing batting position when captains normally assign someone else to move makes no sense. To me these were both major major issues and I'm surprised they are viewed as non-events here. They point to something deeper. We choose to dwell on speculation, some vlearly getting otional over it, but don't comment on physical evidence developing in front of us. Amla was being dictate to. He didn't like being disrespected anymore.

The guy who got into a dressing room brawl with his own teammate?

No I get your point, one doesn't need to be a bully, but they definitely need to be able to command respect. Not just from their teammates, but from the opposition and the general public. I just don't see this in QdK...

Through his teeth. You don't say the things Amla said when he got the captaincy then resign ahead of or midway through the Proteas' biggest Series since his appointment. Read what he said when he was named captain, and you'll know that what he said now is rubbish and a huge contradiction in comparison. Cook has endured worse with his batting form, fan abuse, analysts, celebrities, peers, former greats etc, you name it but stuck it out. Their personalities are the same. Both guys laid back&humble. Look at Cook now. leading arguably the #1 Test side. Amla throwing in the towel like that, knowing AB's captancy is suspect, plus other batsmen besides Elgar off colour? Injury ravaged, against England? Does not correlate!
