One book I'd recommend unhesitatingly wrg Lebanon/Palestinian late 20th century is From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas Friedman.

Thanks Cerebus , I have been wanting to get up to date with the issues there. I will def, make a plan to read your suggestion (maybe do a little review for us?)

.... interesting story there..... had to give it up half way through the series, and have been too scared to start again. I still tackle trilogies tho, when I feel brave. but mostly singles.

You say you haven't finished it yet .... You idiot! This is blasphemy! You MUST finish it! There will be a gap in your education forevermore if you don't. And then you MUST also read the 2 Prequels: The first about Belgarath and the second about Polgara. These two books are the absolute best.

Then there is also the Rivan Codex that you can also take a look at. It gives some nice background information that might be useful while reading the other books. This codex gives background information to many things in the series.

EDIT: I'm sorry I'm calling you an idiot, :p but you really should read the rest. These characters become your friends after a while. I've re-read many of those books just because I it's so damn good.

Well to do it any justice I should start from the beginning again... last time I started, I read non stop cover to cover, I almost got fired. My gf left me, I went broke(I had sales job, those days) and developed many other social problems...(reminds me of StarCraft1& makes me realize I wont be able to buy 2...:()
I still obsess over a good narrative, but I limit it to trilogy's last 3 I read took me 1.5 days:eek:. so David Eddings coming of age series will have to wait until im divorced or retired.

From Beirut to Jerusalem is New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman's account of the time he spent living firstly in Lebanon then Israel as a reporter. Because Friedman was an eyewitness to many of the accounts he describes, his perspective is immediate and anecdotal rather than analytical. TBH I found the first half of the book - Beirut - more compelling than the latter because he characterises the city with vividness and acute insight as a lapsarian Eden.

Won the 1989 National Book Award for nonfiction. A must read for anyone interested in the history of the Jewish/Islamic conflict in the Middle East.

have we decided on a first one?

Just a thought, if this is going to happen maybe the 10 individuals choose a book each, we all agree that they are literature worth reading. then do a random draw?

While I were doing that, I would have killed to have an office job.

AS it turned out, now I have the best of both worlds. I have a frikkin huge office (classroom - can accomodate 50 kids + air conditioning) and in the afternoons after 14:00 I coach cricket in the summer and hockey in the winter.

The pay sucks but the kids are okay for what we can expect nowadays. They are still nowhere how we were back in the day ... but I've experienced worse in neighbouring schools. Some communities in Saf Africa don't give a rats ass for education and then they blame teachers for doing their utmost. And then they also blame teachers if they succomb to their communities' norms.
