What brand names / products should I look at or where can I find out about best-of-breed / roll royce network monitoring tools. What would a big company use for this? They are looking to monitor performance on all hardware from servers to switch to desktop. It's a large national business with branches all over the country.

Played with Cacti, it's quite useful for monitoring switches for traffic usage. Couldn't figure Nagios out, and getting it to work on Windows hosts is a bit of a complex procedure. You might want to investigate products from a company called Colasoft, they have some good network monitoring tools.

I don't think there is one product fits all solution here. You will have to use several products to get a optimal solution.
