Affordable fibre showdown — from R549 for 50Mbps

South African households looking for an Internet connection with download speeds of around 50Mbps will find plenty of packages ranging from around R550 to R800 per month.

Nearly 5 million households in the country are covered by the fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks of the nine biggest fibre network operators (FNOs).

Cool Ideas has upped the price to R639 on there Openserve 40/20Mbps. I think I need to switch to Afrhost, R92 saving.
Any reason I shouldn't?

Seems I've been overpaying on WebAfrica for the last couple of years. I'm currently paying R949 per month for 50/50 uncapped on Vumatel. List price is R659? How is that possible?

If I went for fibre, this is the cheapest option I could go for to ensure decent support :

Afrihost40Mbps10MbpsR557
... Frogfoot as FNO.

From what I've read on this forum, others also been caught out by this from Web Africa.

Seems they're totally underhanded now.

You have to be proactive, keep a check on their price changes, and supposedly contact them to amend yours every time they change.

Webafrica...Contacting them?, Good luck to anyone with that.
Its physically impossible to call them. Its impossible to log a ticket. They do have this extremely kark online chat / Whatsapp line on which majority of the time you wait HOURS for assistance, and once someone eventually responds, they cant assist and needs to "transfer" you to someone else, then you wait hours again. I think their strategy here is hoping the issue wil fix it self.
Also no afterhours support. No easy way to cancel.
One gets fooled by their marketing, One would imagine its a proper ISP with a decent self service portal like Afrihost. Its not.

Glad I don't need to deal with them, then.

Did so a few years ago on someone else's behalf when their online (ticketing) system used to work well for cancellations, changes etc.

Also had a free ADSL test account at one stage, and when I phoned up about something, the agent got into a huff (about what I don't remember) and cancelled it during the call ; sure he's long gone, but did me a favour as I had a bad impression of them after that, so steered clear & never considered them for anything else, since.

Thanks for the comments, I'm on Openserve hence the Afrihost option. I'd like to know how the service is if anybody can comment please.

I wonder why Axxess was not in that list since they have Fibre banners all over MyBroadband?!?!

I wish we had fibre - currently paying R999 per month for a 20mb/s link

Are you unaffected by all the turmoil going on at Cool Ideas, recently, and for months ?

Mostly seems to affect gamers linking to or through Europe. Have a look at the relevant thread - will link it here.

Comments before and after this (selected this randomly) :

For that, and your saving, you should probably look at moving across to Afrihost.

Ouch! Thanks for the feedback. Definitely looks like I'll be moving at the end of the month.

Looks as though many who've been fed up for a long time already, and have reached the limits of what they're prepared to accept are requesting early / immediate cancellations / transfers, so depending on your exact circumstances, you might be able to as well.
