Entry level laptop upgrade suggestions

The entry level laptops of these days are extremely slow.

Please suggest where to start an upgrade, add more RAM or change to SSD? Witch comes first?

I have also seen some models that is built in a manner that you cant easily get to these components, you have to take apart the whole thing! Then it probably wont have an open RAM slot? Have to replace typically a 4GB with a 8GB? CPU upgrade is probably taking it too far cost wise and risky to get into heat troubles?

Any other ideas to speed these up?

Thanks for some advice.

SSD is the best upgrade you can do.
I make sure all my notebooks go out with them.

I have upgraded countless notebooks 5+ years old.
With SSD and clean install it is faster than most notebooks today with standard hard drive.
