US data centre giant in R2.8 billion South African push

Equinix Inc. plans to invest $160 million (R2.8 billion) to build its first data center in South Africa, as part of the firm’s African expansion push.

The US data center company will build its first facility in Africa’s richest city, Johannesburg, and expects to be operational by mid 2024, said Equinix EMEA president Eugene Bergen in an interview.

A data center in the country with the least available electricity in the world, a collapsing Eskom, crazy expensive electricity rates for something you do not get... hope they have Solar farm set up to power their data center, else this is a crazy investment and the data center will become as useless as Eskom itself.

The market is getting very overcrowded. NTT, IS, Amazon, Azure, other small bit players and larger players...and power being an issue in the country, is it wise to concentrate everything there in Gauteng for the most part?
There's space in Port Elizabeth, East London and possibly Cape Town with the potential for growth in these areas too.

The latest Teraco data centre has sufficient back up power to deal with Eskom failures
