From the common barn swallow to the exotic giraffe, thousands of animal species are in precipitous decline, a sign that an irreversible era of mass extinction is under way, new research finds.

The study, published in the Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences, calls the current decline in animal populations a "global epidemic" and part of the "ongoing sixth mass extinction" caused in large measure by human destruction of animal habitats.

The previous five extinctions were caused by natural phenomena.

Humans are natural phenomena too. Our actions may seem unnatural, but from a galaxy point of view, its fairly natural. A dominant species, who are reshaping a world for their needs. Not too dissimilar really to parasites or viruses or bacteria for example, just on a much grander planetary scale.

Making a profit is absolutely one if the highest obligations any and every human being has. We need to produce more than we consume else we whither and die.

Why a profit? Because things wear out need to be replaced. Want to improve life? Then you need to make even more profit.

If you as an adult consume more than you produce (ie make a loss) then you are a leech and drain.

Being anti-profit amounts to being anti-human.

Yeah, but at the cost of the environment?

Yup. Drowning in our own toxins is what humans do best.

Along with taking all other life forms on the planet with us, that is.

Yeah, but at the cost of the environment?
All "natural costs" balance out - that's the beauty of Nature. When a fish species colonises a new pool it destroys the habitat for mozzies. Shamepies. Like any other natural species, we sometimes foul our own lairs a little, but as soon as things become intolerable we make adjustments and nature's balance is restored. Humans are far, far better than any other species at doing that. Which is why we triumph.

:crying:This is precisely why I don't want to live forever.
You've no choice in that matter. The only decision that's in your hands is whether you'll experience catastrophic warming or not. :p
