Hi

with webafrica

I have been trying without success to connect with adsl.

I get the error message "Error 769. (After about 1 minute or so of dialing) The specified destination is unreachable" I have contacted Telkom for support. They told me it was a problem with my network card.

I am connecting with a USB adsl modem "Mecer" brand.

I have re-installed the modem as well as my network card. I have confirmed that my network card functions and is plugged in with the ping command to another computer on my home network.

Installing the modem on the other computer leads to the same result.

I first noticed this last night +- 11:30 pm 6 oct 2006 while playing WOW.

I got disconnected and couldn't reconnect.

I have tried to connect with a friends account (telkom isp) and have the same problem.

Please help (don't as me to contact Telkom please)

Thanks

This has not resolved my issue. My network adapter was already enbled and working. Confirmed this by pinging another machine and got reply.

Support at webafrica recons this is a Telkom issue. Like I said before Telkom recons its a hardware software issue.

Soz then slurpy, ;) Well, then there's nothing much more we can tell you, except sort it out with telkom, and I agree with Surv0, get a router rather.

This would be either a modem problem (Faulty Modem) or a line error. Sometimes the usb modems do not give true error messages when they have difficulties connecting to the internet.

I've never worked with a usb adsl modem before (don't even know what one looks like), but is it possible for you to determine whether or not you can communicate with the modem successfully? Maybe a blinking light, or viewing the config details of the modem. Just want to make sure it's not the modem. Also could you post the modems model number.

Good luck ;o)

Error 769

1. Check the dialer settings, making sure that the user isn't set to static IP addressing (less they are supposed to) and that all other settings are ok.

2. Reinstall TCP/IP.

3. Reboot the computer.

4. Reinstall all dialup components.

And if all els fails, try the Telkom guest account and check if you can open www.telkom.co.za:

Usern@me: guest@telkomadsl
P@ssword: guest

Hope it helps ;)

check. no go

2. Reinstall TCP/IP.
check. didn't help

3. Reboot the computer.
at least 20 times already

4. Reinstall all dialup components.
check still nothing.

Took the modem to a buddy's place. it worked at his place on his laptop.
Took his laptop to my place. Same error 769.
Borrowed his ADSL netgear router. Gives some error. (I'll post it when I'm at home) PPPoE fail 127 or somesuch.

At the mo I am convinced its a Telkom issue. Harrassing them now.

sounds like usb modem is not being enabled in system.. go into the device driver section(system properties-> device manager) and find your device. It may look like it has a yellow '?' on it or a red 'X'.

red X = device is disabled.. enable it.

yellow ? = device is not installed/lost installation or config. best to reinstall it with device drivers. after it all done modem should light up and the dsl icon should reappear in corner of screen(assuming this is a bundled usb modem, meccer one is similar to telkom unless its a microcom one)

device drivers = cd that came with usb modem or download latest from manufacturer.(btw there is a probelm with the old dynomite drivers and sp2.. it hangs during installation. solution is to eject cd and reinsert it when it hangs :p)

if you not sure if divice is in the device manager.. reinstall it anyways. heh.. 769 = it can't find the device required be it lan nic or usb modem.. in this case it is looking for the usb modem. You being able to ping another pc is fine but thats using the lan nic and not the usb one which is what u want it to use.

hrm if it does not work after a clean installation on a new pc then the usb modem may be broken :(

Almost definitely sounds like a telkom problem. Was the adsl light stable on either of the modems?

Nah prob fixed. Telkoms auth server or something was busted. They re-installed and it worked. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
