I have an odd problem.

When I try play an AVI file with media player on my PC, from some directories, the Directory "crashes". If the movie has started already, then I can continue viewing, if not, then I have to close that directory (Ctrl + Alt + del) and then try again.

If I move the movie file to the root, then in most cases it works fine.

I have run registry checkers, anti-virus, anti basically everything, and still no success.

Any ideas ?

How many movies files are in that directory?

Also try disabling AVI preview in Win XP ... Google it.

Moving the file to a different hard drive doesn't help. Moving the file to a shorter path helps a little, as does removing the avi preview, but if I leave the folder open when playing the movie file, all open explorer folders stop responding.

By switching the AVI preview off, it just takes a little longer to go mad.....

ok, one of the AVI files might be damaged and Windows is still trying to read the damaged portion. Try running them through a video converter to fix them?

Definately disable previews, the little preview window in Explorere can stuff things up big time.

To disable it:
Start , Run.. regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
