Eskom guzzling enough diesel to fill 200,000 cars per day

Eskom is burning through 9 million litres of diesel per day to run its open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) generating units, chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer has revealed.

This volume of diesel is enough to fill the tanks of up to 112,500 Toyota Hilux bakkies or 200,000 Volkswagen Polos per day.

Diesel price sees dramatic increase in price, suddenly loadshedding starts just a few days later and Eskom needs to burn 9 mil of diesel a day..?

Who is profiting from the diesel sales here..

/tinfoil hat off

Beauticians...dentists....

And then:

Eskom’s endeavour to pull out of a R5bn tender for fuel oil that it awarded to Econ Oil last November has been dealt a blow after independent adjudication found it was valid and enforceable.

TimesLIVE has seen an adjudication decision on the matter issued by senior counsel Kevin Trisk last Friday, which settles the months' long dispute that has seen one non-executive director resign as well as threats of a defamation lawsuit against Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter.

Trisk also awarded R21.6m in damages to Econ Oil in respect of four months of orders that Econ Oil was not given as per the contract requirements.

Econ Oil is owned by advocate Nothemba Mlonzi and has supplied fuel oil to Eskom since the early 2000s.
Eskom issued a statement earlier this year confirming it would cancel the five-year contract to supply 14 million litres a month to its power stations.

This was after it found evidence of irregularities, including collusion with Eskom employees and price-fixing suspected to include previous contracts dating back to 2011 worth a combined R15bn.

Eskom previously said it was convinced that Econ Oil was allegedly involved in corruption that had resulted in the company overcharging the power utility to the tune of R500m.

Just the usual....

That is actually a bloody good question, are Eskom paying the retail price + tenderpreneur markup on the diesel...

Or is the government smart enough to get it to them sans things like the RAF bullshyte (at least)

I feel this is one of those questions similar to "Is water wet'?

At 9million litres a day its a question that should be asked.

It would work out to the RAF benefiting to the tune of R500m a month for fuel that never ever sees use on a vehicle on the roads of SA, its also a R500m figure that Eskom could be using to burn down the debt or maintain the other stations.

If anything, given the state of power generation in this country I'd almost be suggesting that the government basically get Diesel to Eskom at pretty much the BFP.

Oberholzer said the diesel for one OCGT unit running at maximum capacity costs Eskom about R700,000 per hour.

He also said that Eskom currently pays about R4,700 per MW of electricity generated by OCGTs.
Assuming Eskom runs all 3,000MW of OCGT capacity for just over two peak hours in the day, the diesel would cost R28.2 million.
But based on feedback from Eskom over the last few days, the utility is likely relying on these power stations more regularly.

Jesus, if the price of just diesel just wobbles it costs millions.
R4700 per MW o_O

These guys at Eskom is only hired to do damage control and make excuses.

Is there not a single person who actually does any design/planning for anything at Eskom ?

Everything this idiot is spewing in this article is none of our problem but the way he communicates its as if we are as much at fault as Eskom. So fking ridiculous.

Government and smart in the same sentence? Ok.
