Eskom CEO wants mines to produce their own power

Well if mines could do that it sounds like a great idea, lateral thinking FTW. Would take a huge load of the grid.

I wonder how quickly it would take the mines to do this?

It would also take that "BHP Billiton" pricing element out of the equation if it still exists.
Not knowing what the mines actually pay Eskom for power, I suspect they get a discounted rate. The BHP Billiton issue is historical but one wonders how much of that pricing for them and others is still in the system.

Err ...and the huge initial outlay and cost to our mines who are already under immense pressure to remain economically viable and profitable.

Silly solution. Eksdom typical.

Eskom you had your chance.
When companies like Hullets wanted to expand their power generation and sell the excess power to the grid you morons said no

Eskom needs to be completely disbanded as a going concern and its assets sold off, not privatised. I highly doubt it could be privatised anyway, who would want to take on all of Eskom's liabilities? You can't polish a turd.

The mines have been asking this for a while now, They want to produce their own power; and said they are ready to go ahead with it. They just need to green light.

This is actually good thinking from Eskom.

Right... so you would prefer for us all to sit in darkness?

Maybe because they had no choice if they wanted to remain open for business!?

Another example of the government offloading their decades of total squander, corruption and inane decisions onto the already overburdened public and businesses.

Obviously if the government deregulated electricity production and allowed private companies to produce electricity they would be able to take over from Eskom using the assets that have been sold off including the working power stations and the transmission grid. That is a different type of privatisation from simply privatising Eskom itself in its entirety.

And so it has begun. The mine will produce electricity for themselves. Then they can start selling it to there own workers in the mining housing compound. Not long and they can start selling to the municipalities.....

bye bye eskom

Eskom has always fought IPP's especially large generators. And as for pumping excess into the grid? Eskom hates this idea on all levels. As far a Eskom is concerned, independent power generation, even for own use, is like walking into the EFF office and calling Julius a monkey.

Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter wants mines to produce their own electricity so pressure can be taken off the national grid.
Now tell that to uncle Gweezy! He can make it happen with a coupe of signatures.
EDIT: and he can lean on NERSA as well.
