More free electricity proposed for South Africa

Eskom board chair Mteto Nyati has called for the government to increase the free basic electricity (FBE) grant from 50kWh and for municipalities to ring-fence their electricity budgets to ensure the funds go to residents who need them.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Nyati explained that the current 50kWh allocation was defined long ago, adding that it is too small for even small households today.

“So we’re saying: throw that money in the pot so that it gets directed to the people who need it,” said Nyati.

Nyati isn’t the only one advocating for more free basic electricity for indigent households in South Africa.
Ja you corrupt, self-serving animals.

1.) Keep the poor right where they are so you look like saviors when you let some crumbs fall their way.
2.) Continue to mismanage and steal so that this stagnant economy never lets the poor change their status.

ANC are pathetic.

Maybe I'm slow today, but why is consumption going up? If people are purchasing more appliances then they clearly have more disposable income.. And devices have become generally more energy efficient.

Unless it's all heaters and geysers that are a once off purchase but they cannot afford the monthly units.

It's scary to think that someone who is the chairperson of the board of one of the largest companies in the world doesn't understand how inflation works.

Does government pay for FBE? In that case this is a clever Eskom tactic to increase guaranteed income.

Why not offer more free electric, charge your current customers more, supply less and then make more profit?

Increasing the amount doesn't really make sense. It does make sense to review it, but arguing inflation increase is odd as usage should have come down as things like lightbulbs have become a lot more efficient, same for freezers.

Wouldn't expect it to have changed too much though since the main consumption should be from stove tops / heaters unless they're gas.

Should maybe look at it as though only use electricity to cook, so it's safer in townships as lots of issues with fires.

Inflation has absolutely nothing to do with this which is why it makes no sense. 50kwh is 50kwh. It's like arguing that a kg of lead is heavier than a kg of feathers.

F off you dumb bunt. Im already looking after 60 peasants a month.

I don't get it to boil a cup of water uses the same power it used 20 years ago. WTF is inflation got to do with power consumption.

If anything people are using less power, 20 years ago we had incandescent bulbs 60W and 100W wheras today LED bulbs 5W and 8W. People still cook the same if not more efficiently today that 20 years ago.

If you're consuming more today than 20 years ago, it's more than likely due to population increase in the household, that's a different problem entirely.

Ssssh you're bringing in logic here.

The people who can barely generate enough electricity; complain about people stealing electricity and are now punishing people for not using electricity want to *checks notes* give away more free electricity.

Chat, please make it make sense.
