South Africa's rooftop solar surge making a big dent in load-shedding

The surge in rooftop solar adoption in South Africa in the past few years has significantly reduced demand on Eskom's grid and alleviated load-shedding.

Eskom has told MyBroadband its energy sent out has decreased by approximately 2.8% in 2024, while the figure including Independent Power Producer (IPP) generation has decreased by 1.79%.

May be an image of text that says Solar pane is op. Ek is nou van die grid af......bye Eskom.

I wonder what portion of this is households vs businesses / office buildings and malls...

ANC: Eskom will always be a monopoly as it's too important to privatize.

Also the ANC: Thanks God the peephole are making their own power, she help us too much...
ANC: We will now tax the sun because it is shining out of our bungholes...

Eskom, the only company in the country that's really pleased with itself that people are buying less of its only product.

This part takes the cake:
“If the sales are lower, the relevant variable costs will adjust in accordance.”
In other words if Eskom sells less electricity they will just compensate by getting Nersa to rubber stamp increases in the electricity tariffs.

Keep going Eskom. 10%+ increases per year will just reduce the ROI period on my solar system and drive more paying customers off your grid.
