I think it irresponsible that the Johannesburg municipality sided against Eskom. They are exacerbating the demand for free services.

ANC and they want their voters... Anything to keep a voter, and to stay in power.

They should really set up loadshedding schedules according to amount owed.

Top of the log > Morning & night peak every day...

Doesn't seem like much of an impasse for Eskom. Switch the power back on when people start paying. There is no middle ground. Pay for electricity like everyone else does you fsckers.

If it is true that Soweto has never been shed before then that is disgusting. People that actually pay for their electricity are getting cut for 4-10 hrs a day and these fsckers never get cut? Bullschit.

I don't know where this misinformation comes from, but Soweto does get blackouts. In the South we used to get hit for 2 hours max while parts of Soweto got hit for 4 hours back in 2010/2011.

Soweto is VERY VERY huge, so if someone, in let's say Dobsonville, says they don't get hit, doesn't mean Orlando, Diepkloof, Moletsane etc don't as well. They have had power and water shortages for years, prior to Eskoms issues.

We have local elections next year so they're probably thinking about that more than sensible response to the entrenched culture of non payment in Soweto.

This really hurt you guys. We pay.

It is very sad that the people that do pay get cut off too. Sadly most don't pay so I can see why Eskom would cut them. Innocent people get caught in the cross fire.... Same is going to happen when Eskom cuts power to the municipalities that don't pay.....

Looks like Eskom is getting serious about wanting their money and they will cut if they don't get their money.

Delays in solving a problem will leave you with a bigger one down the line. Doesn’t politicians know this or do they plan short term?

Politicians can't think further than the next vote. They'd sell their own mothers if it meant another vote.

I'd say its possibly a case of majority of illegal connections never get load shed due to how they are connected to the grid, don't know the ins and outs of how they are wired and from where, but I'd say its possible that although a substation may be off for load shedding, they are still getting power via the way they are connected?? Again, just speculating, would need people with knowledge to input

IE, They may be officially on schedules and getting shed, but possibly still getting power(if that makes sense?)

This would not be possible to do for several reasons.

No wonder they are protesting the prepaid meters, no pay - no service.

And the ANC crony has spoken to "protect" the voter base. I hope they lose the next election in Gauteng.

About time!

Reading about 86% non payment rate in Soweto filled me with rage. This news pleases me greatly.

Sucks for the honest few that actually do pay, but unfortunately they are living in the land of the free loaders. Time to cut off their supply, call in the Army when they riot and use force against them.
Here I sit in darkness because of idiots killing off other Africans, who come from countries supplying us vital MW (Mozambique). Time for them to learn that every action has a reaction.
They should load shed these areas first, day in and day out until the debt is paid in full.

Eskom said in a press release "We are teaching these savages how to utilise modern services."

I hope those paying for the electricity are refunded or provided generators. It must be getting cold up on the reef these days.

i also don't see the problem of non-payers being cut. really, .... if my electricity acc is not paid, in FULL, by the due date, then as sure as F, the next day the electricity is cut, notice on the gate, and hefty penalty fee added.
so i am quite comfortable with everybody else getting the same treatment.

if eskom cut the entire area, including the paying users.... well, my brother, join the club... here we also spend many a night hours in darkness without power, even though elec acc is up to date.
time to lobby the council and eskom and gov, to correct the situation, i.e. setup the systems and processes that payers get what they pay for and non-payers get what they deserve; nothing.

i can fully understand that some people cannot afford electricity, but sorry to say, i too have many things, despite working my ass off all day, i also cannot afford, and i also get no sympathies, i just have to accept one of basic rules of life... if i cannot afford it, i have to go without it until i can.

not sure how it works in Jhb/Soweto, but here in pta, if you are a low (no?) income user, you get to receive X units of electricity for free. even though i don't get s*t for free, i can accept sponsoring the poor getting some free allocation electricity .
but you can agree that it kinda becomes unacceptible when payiing customers with accounts up to date, sit without power because some groups take unlimited electricity for free by refusing to pay for their usage beyond granted free allocation and illegal connections.... so by all means cut the power.

if eskom wants to keep its paying customers to stay customers, they gonna have to start getting drastic with freeloaders and illegal connections. the people need to start acting responsible with their votes when its time to vote for the gov that is supposed to fix a better life for all. throwing freebies out to silence the moaning does not fix the problems.
if the gov had arranged building of enough power stations, the wouldve been enough surplus to give a free allocation to the poor, without affecting the users that has to finance it

do you get refunded during load shedding? anybody? we certainly don't. no freebie gen either... all we get is a big fat FU from eskom and gov, while we sit in the dark, also soon to be cold dark, while the lights in non-paying areas are shining brightly.
the only solution is for everybody to pay their dues, live within their means, then there can be a hope of enough elect to give to all
