Eskom cuts off non-paying municipalities

When they "cut" it there was a big outry last year. Soweto debt is not municipal though, or just partly. That is why they are driving the smart meter project there.
Seems to me that it is even easier to cut people when they're direct Eskom clients as opposed to municipal.

As to the "partly" part, cut that part now using the same formula they've used for these Northern Cape municipalities. #SowetoElectricityMustFall :p

They won't do that again. Massive outcry about it because those in Soweto feel that electricity should be free. Cutting power there will hurt the ANC.

Exactly why Eskom should be broken up and not supply directly to consumers. Generation should be done by one entity and maybe include bulk distribution. Supply to consumers via local utility companies and municipalities. If local politicians want to buy votes, they should do it with their own (constituency's) money.

It also makes the rot far harder to hide.

It's a very unfortunate situation. The municipality is the middle man collecting the electricity revenue and not paying Eskom. In effect, the municipality should disconnect the non-payers. The Eskom supply should always be available.

One slight glimmer of hope is that since the rotten municipal employees also live within that municipal supply area, their electricity is also being cut, so it may force them into paying if only for their own benefit.

And be charged with fraud and theft.

Not they feel it should be free. ANC told them it would be free if they got elected into power again.
