Harare residents in Khayelitsha are facing a major electricity crisis after Eskom refused to provide services to the area due to gang extortions.

The area has been identified as a massive playground for gangs who extort money from businesses in the form of a protection fee.

This means if businesses want to operate smoothly, they are required to pay this fee to ensure that they are not targeted by criminal elements.

On Monday, Weekend Argus reporter, Velani Ludidi, broke the news that a criminal syndicate demanded a R20,000 protection fee per month from Eskom if it wanted to continue operating in the area.

But the power utility refused to pay.

This means until the safety of Eskom employees is guaranteed, it is likely that the area will remain in the dark.

If anyone ever had any doubt that Twat in a Hat is completely out of his depth as Minister of Police, they should study the last couple of years' worth of riots, protests and extortionate acts such as the above!

Good luck to the community infected by these criminals...

So wait. A gang has caused parts of Khayelitsha to have no power and that's good excellent news? Wouldn't police sent in to **** with the gang be excellent news & the rest of the community don't have to pay the price for it?

Look at the construction industry: the private sector pay construction mafias and it is well-known. Eskom are now taking a stance on this. Maybe the voters (I won't hold out much hope) will reflect the reason why gangs are so prevalent in their area is they keep voting for the same ANC dodos since 1994. Also lots of likely illegal electricity connections in that area, which means they are getting free electricity illegally.

SAPS too understaffed / under trained / lack of resources / lack of management.

Protection and security for the the ANC cadre's is where the money is being spent - a true reflection of ANC; **** the people, all about self enrichment and looking after themselves.

A competent police force would have easily sorted out scum like this. A couple of sting operations and the gangs wouldn't exist.

Fill a couple of Eskom vans with Special Task Force people, and drive out to the repair site. When the gangsters rock up and demand their cut, get out and arrest/kill the bastards.

if only somebody has the B@lls to stand up and cut these Gangsters down to size
Often, a strong stand by the police solves the issue. Sometimes it's vigilantism. But sometimes all it takes is for them to make a wrong move and bother someone more powerful.

Then the innocent is not even allowed to protect themselves. When these gangs and criminals seem to get away with this.
