nowhere does it mention anything of the costs involved

Electricity has become so expensive that demand has dropped because of it. Next month the new tariffs kick in too. Demand will be even lower.

Not for the illegal connections, they don't care about demand and tariffs. They couldn't care less If you paying customers sit without electricity because of them or your business suffers because of them. Guess what, ANC government clearly don't give a fck either.

I mentioned in a few threads that my 'upper-middle class neighbours' have started to use fires outsides (bricks/wood/pots) to cook sometimes. R200 prepaid electricity lasts me just a few days now... and that's with the aircons off...so I can't even blame them.

Are you sure it's not an occasional braai? It sounds odd that they would not even afford a a basic gas setup.

Ya. I spoke to a few of them and they said it's cheaper to cook outside now and save that extra few hundred rands for more food at the end of the month.
People are starting to feel the squeeze more now than ever.

And the problem is the more people that leave Eskom the more they going to push the price up what a fck up for us that cant leave

Then maybe they are nowhere close to being middle class and are just poor people who inherited a house in the middle class area? I mean if they are that squeezed?

Back home in the sticks electricity is also not cheap but my parents can still afford to buy some on their Sassa pension and still be left with some change for food and a 9kg gas bottle, if we didn’t congregate there monthly and eat their food they would probably be able to make it the whole month without asking for any help.

Yeah was going to say the same thing, also wood costs more then gas and electricity and gas can end up costing more then electricity. So either these people are highly in debt or aren't actually middle class at all. Or they are the silliest definition of middle class at around 20k a month.
Perhaps they should look at canning other services before it's resorting to burning expensive wood outside.

Should be interesting to compare cost of using wood vs electricity.
Simple calc :
wood = ~R18 per kwh (16MJ/kg; R4/kg)
elec = ~R5 per kwh (Homepower 3 non-local authority; >600kwh scale; incl network charge).

Then could factor in efficiency of transferring heat from elec stove vs wood appliance.
Also the exact Eskom tariff you're being charged...
