Eskom delays Koeberg repairs to reduce load-shedding this winter

Eskom announced on Friday that it has delayed scheduled repairs to Koeberg’s steam generators after its contractor warned that the maintenance would take longer than estimated.

“Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station was shut down on 18 January 2022 for a regular refuelling and maintenance outage, the scope of which included the replacement of the three steam generators on the unit,” Eskom stated.

“This deferral does not impact the safe operation of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant or on Eskom’s life extension plan for Koeberg, which requires the replacement of the steam generators on both units,” the power utility assured.

Hope this is true

they talk like they think there will be greater generating capacity if they delay it... like... the fleet is going to get better, not worse.

Surely take the hit as soon as possible while they at least have some generating capacity left to fill the gap.

Don't complain so much, we need a new tv series to follow on from Chernobyl.

Yoh, sounds like pretty standard Eskom "operating and maintenance" procedure to me, aka run her 'til something pops. design by destruction.

I wonder if any sort of realistic risk assessment was done as I can't see real component testing being able to be done in an operational plant.

Let's delay maintenance on a NUCLEAR power plant - what's the worst that could happen?

I am not saying its completely safe (not a nuclear engineer), but in that style of Nuclear reactor, there are two steam loops. One on the reactor side, that does not directly connect to the power generation side. There are seperated specifically for safety reasons.

So the chances of turbine generators on the top right messing up the reactor side is tiny. Also you will notice those parts are outside of the containment structure, so even if it blows up, we end up with a Medupi, not a Fukushima.

They aren't delaying maintenance or repairs, they are delaying the steam generator upgrade.

What eskom announces, delay replacement.

What Mybroadband reports, delay repairs... 1+1 doesn't equal 2 to Mybroadband Screenshot_20220305_123557_com.twitter.android.jpg

Makes sense, Eskom already paid the R208 million contractual fine for being late on the contract.

So, being late now isn't going to change finances too much.
