The “real” electricity price increase expected for 2022

While Eskom has applied for an electricity price increase of 20.5%, the actual jump in tariffs charged by the utility could be around 32.15%, according to calculations by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).

The regulator's pro forma implementation plans on Eskom's planned price increases that will take effect from 1 April 2022 have confused South Africans because it differs from the increases the utility has requested.

They'll lose that argument, same as when people pointed out the muncipalities that the increase last year was more likely 20% not 17% and the muncipalities were like naaah see it's 17% for the lowest tier.

Currently paying R1,68 for the first 600kwh and R2.70 for every kwh after that. Am I being overcharged?

I live in the KwaDukuza area, Eskom chargers R1.34 per Kwh and the eskom substation is 700mtrs from my house and the municipality chargers me R2.54. Can't believe I pay R1.20 to get it 700mtrs

Well, anything between 20% & 30% and beyond is utterly disgraceful - we all know there are people who can run Eskom efficiently, proven track record, without all the associate BEE corruption, but they are kept from participating and the skelms kept in place due to racist laws.

Just look at how much Re Ruyter has done in terms of servicing debt in comparison to previous BEE CEO's.

Why should ordinary hardworking folks pay for their dishonesty and incomptence?
Oh probably same reason why ANC politicians got away with stealing R500mil covid funds & Cyril looked the other way when Zuma was state capturing.
They simply cannot generate wealth except to steal it from those that can and do.

Don't forget the service fees that metros add:

In CoJ we paying R1000/93kWh = R10.75/kWh

"Eskom would, therefore, collect around 40-41% more revenue from standard customers than in the 2021/2022 financial year."
"2022 power price increase would actually be 32.15%"

OUCH, OUCH, OUCH - thank goodness for Solar + Lithium - now I'll break even in much less than 7 years.

Eskom can suck it... we're completely off the grid.

How long does it take to get disconnected from Eskom and not pay access charges anymore?

You know you are not really paying R10.75/kWh

Dont be Eskom and skew the numbers.
Is there an error with my calculation?
Please explain what's wrong?

How much do you pay for 93kWh in CoJ including service fees + VAT postpaid?

How much electric do you get for R1000 in CoJ postpaid?

You're including the service fees as part of the kWh price calculation, which they aren't. If you use 0 kWh you're still going to pay 700+ odd whatever it is. So in reality you're paying 300R for the 93kwh so around R3.22. I think that's what he most likely means by your maths.

... and when everyone who used to pay for everything goes off grid they will just adjust the 'availability' charge to deliver the cash from your wallet to their thieving hands as normal

when those that actually paid for electricity stop paying (because they are off grid) eskom and the municipalities will raise the network availability charges (paid whether you use actual electricity or not) untill their salaries and 3 other to do the same job are paid.
