"..........allowing it to recoup more for unexpected costs to produce electricity."

What they actually mean is the loses from unpaid Municipal accounts, unpaid Government Dept accounts, theft and illegal connections.

And here I'm paying R3 a unit in the "City that Cares For You!".

It's inevitable I like many others will go grid tied solar. My goal is to reduce my electricity bill by half.

Almost as bad as the City of Cape Towns water price increases, and their fudged up sewerage cost added to it.

3 rand per kWh?
Bloody hell.

I'm paying 1.63 a kWh.
Just over R2 and thats only because 50% of our power is from solar - otherwise the block tariffs would be insane

My pv system only needs to produce another 60MWh for my average price per KWh from pv to be R3.15/KWh. I should be able to produce 15MWh per year.

Based on current pv production I should get there in 4 years time, by which time the CoCT tariffs will be over R5/KWh. The system will only be 5 years old by then and I should easily still be able to get 10 more years out of it taking my cost to under R0.30/KWh over the 15 year period, assuming no maintenance costs which is very likely.

Utility provided electricity cannot compete with solar + storage if you have the roof space to install solar.

Don't forget about the Cubans.

FYI as a single person living in a house in Johannesburg I pay (according to the above account):

1. 395% more for sewerage; and
2. 164% more for refuse removal.

@Jan can I suggest an article on the comparative municipal costs - rates, electricity, water, refuse and sewerage - of living in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban ?

That’s different.. what they mean is surge pricing on coal from fraud/corrupt contracts on coal and breakdown remedies.

So I maintain that a solution needs to be found for non-property owners or non-permanent residents as it’s a market that quite huge. I still think an IPP investment scheme which is tied into a municipality could work.. but since they want profit they will never do it.

So I was looking at the situation and telling wife that you basically forced into either leave SA or invest into it via property & solar etc and hope you don’t get taken by political risk & diminishing roi as currency faulters.. and to me, the latter seems a bad option even if you try and be optimistic as municipalities will fight back.

This has been predicted years & years ago, we have now reached that downward spiral brought by incompetent & corrupt leadership. Vavi! Amanda!

Freestate dorpie, flat rate prepaid. R2.61 / KWh, went up from R2.28 / KWh on 1 Jul.

Duh hey..........but it totally has a knock on effect. They reality is we are being bled dry by the theft and vandalism, someone has to pay for it all. Guess who.......
