Eskom employee nailed for theft

An Eskom employee is facing charges of theft after he was caught allegedly stealing transformer oil and power safety solvent gel at the power utility’s Rosherville premises in Johannesburg.

According to Eskom, the man was stopped by security personnel while attempting to leave the premises.

We are disappointed that one of our own is implicated in the alleged theft.
Steal billions.. be hailed a hero; steal a tiny bit.. we are disappoint.

African priorities

Next week:

"ESKOM secretary nabbed: scissors, paperclips and rubber bands found in her possession."
ESKOM financial woes stopped dead in it's tracks.

"This is THE turnaround we have been dreaming about" said Calib Cassim when approached for comment.

I love the sound of good news early in the week.

The thing is that this is probably not the first time this person did this.

This might have been carrying on for months if not years. Eventually you run out of "luck".

So good on security finally catching the thieves.
We pay for this loss at the end of the day whilst the thieves profit.

That's how it usually works, they get emboldened with time and even start thinking they are invincible.

Maybe this would explain why so many substations are burning to the ground? The Eskom employees are stealing the transformer oil left, right and center, leading to the transformers overheating and catching fire...

Was it perhaps sabotage rather than theft? (I didn't read the full article)

Whether or not it's deliberate sabotage is a tough call. The criminal should be charged with sabotage instead of theft...this will definitely help to send a clear message that messing with substations will get you thrown in jail for much longer when compared to theft charges.

Actually, that might be a good incentive for Eskom.

Pay the security guard personally a good bonus when they uncover theft. That would give them a great incentive to catch the crooks (obviously it needs to be proven otherwise someone might try to game the system by just loading stuff into vehicles, and then "catching" them as they leave, so a camera on the parking area/loading bay is a must). It's a win-win if done correctly and would taper off if everyone left is honest.
