Eskom is spending R178 billion on power lines to connect a glut of renewable energy generating capacity coming online in the next 10 years — more than two-thirds of its entire coal-fired generation fleet.

It's something like R30m/km for transmission lines supposedly, so 5650 * 30m = ~170bn (the 5650 was last November what they'd said they'd build, the 8650 they want to build now seems like an underquote).
That's US rates, but sounds about right for South Africa as well.

Broken, patchwork infrastructure, that doesn't connect to the power supply, and will probably be delivered in Nelspruit, when it's needed in the karoo.

Yup and in 2016 a Curro bought a piece of land and by the end of 2016 there was a school, this piece of land was cleared in 2014 by the government.
