Eskom had no bailouts from 1923 to 2008, now it has R49 billion in 1 year

Turns out it's much easier and cheaper to operate a utility that only provides services to a minority.
Economies of scale does not favour generating electricity just for a small group of people. This is why ESCOM was working on a plan to supply the entire southern Africa with power circa 1994.

The only point I would raise is that Eskom was only servicing about 5 Million Max countrywide people at that stage, now they are servicing 10 times that amount. But yeah... carry on...

It is still only the 5 million that are paying. The others want it for free and will break and burn to get it for free.

lol at the crying over eskom only servicing a select in the past but now they must service more.

there was provisioning made for a lot more than just a select. then some power stations have been shut down or torn apart, reserves sold off. future development plans thrown in the bin, the complete how to manual handed on a silver platter used as toilet paper. lol idiots.

nowadays there were attempts to build some more power stations and that couldnt even be done right.

even greater lol at the attempt to glorify the electricity supply for currently supplying in dire conditions, running a country on diesel generators is not clever at all, neither is leeching on its economy any achievement.

agreements made and then not honoured, stealing left right and center. the more things change the more they stay the same.

Provide electricity for an elite few and "make provisioning" for everybody else? I can totally see how cool you would be if the ANC Eskom did that to you.

There is no way of sugar coating this, stop trying.

when the "elite" few handed over their vip pass, there was the ability to provide for everyone, but instead the new leaders stole from the people they supposedly struggled for and blamed everyone else. like they are still doing today.

There is no way of sugar coating this, stop trying.

the irony is stupefying

Ok sure.

The fact that Eskom managed to electrify a "select few" population without any issues for almost 50 years tells me that the Eskom company was run in a matter in which demand met supply. If demand increased during the period, so did the supply. Hence the people running the business were competent in that regard.

From 1994, the frantic electrifying of all and sundry without adequately increasing the supply of the product people were consuming was obviously one of Eskoms shortfalls. That right there is a business mistake. By this logic the people running Eskom were incompetent in this regard.

The list of incompetencies goes on and on, hence all the bailouts since 1998?

Do you not agree that it's currently being run, and has been run, by incompetent corrupt people from at least the date of the first bailout?

Why did we have to do the frantic electrification from 94 to begin with? What was happening between 1923 and 1994? Excluding people from the electricity grid and patting yourself on the back for a job well done looks like foolishness to me.

And I thought the heading said there were no bailouts until 2008?

I think incompetence and a corruption are very much the reasons why Eskom is in this mess.

It was clever. They knew those people won't pay for their electricity.

The rest of Africa is such a cool place to live.
You mean the rest of Africa that was never colonialised and without a history of oppression, theft and exploitation by Europeans?

Ethiopia so hot right now. Also, to think after those damn oppressors left, it would get better. White people are to blame for everything at all times for all eternity. Angola with a completely untapped massive oil supply by Portugal during colonisation and yet still Angola is garbage.

We're talking about the same Eskom that is providing the same amount of annual power generation in 2018 as 2003 but with 30% more employees? The same Eskom where power generation is on a downward trend since 2014?

Almost as if it's not your rubbish excuse of Apartheid, but rather a complete failure to increase generation to meet demand. ANC planning at African time on an African schedule, I guess.

Lost of extra stupid going on in here.

Yeah, but it's mainly from the anti-MyBroederBond fighters, cannot blame Apartheid or WMC for the ANC governments failure to increase generating capacity in time for projected population and economic growth and then for the Khusile and Medupi serious delays and cost overruns, if those had been completed on time and at least near budget we'd have still have lots of debt but at least no economy killed loadshedding.

For YOU -- my fellow MYBroederbonder

Many of the ANC’s policies are similar to those of the old National Party, which ran a government with significant socialist traits, along with the same corrupt state-capitalism we see today.

But we had the cheapest electricity in the world, and it never failed, they say. Yeah, well, not so fast. Only 36% of the country’s people had electricity. In rural areas, this was only 12%. Today, more than 90% of the population has access to electricity, and in rural areas it’s now 80%.

The Broederbond: A prototype for State Capture

See if you can spot the -- DISCONNECT !

Today, more than 90% of the population has access to electricity, and in rural areas it’s now 80%.

BUT but but .....

"THEY" -- DO NOT PAY FOR IT !

It's Apartheid's fault and the ANC's.

They each contributed to the problem.

The fact is there are people denying the role Apartheid played in the situation and no one defending the ANC for their incompetence.

Of course, we can talk about the failures of apartheid and that of the ANC, there's no contradiction.

Well, it's not like the ANC is being punished hard for this super big blunder, hopefully they get voted out, and the Apartheid too, oh wait!
