What a colossal wast of money this will be...but please, go ahead.
I guess the alternative is to complain about higher prices. Whatever you choose to do, either investing in solar, in insulation or in doing exactly nothing….you’ll be paying more anyway. The question is in which one of the many options will you be paying least in the long run. But you know that ;)

Turns out you don’t have to go to Alaska for double glazing.
You're even dumber than I thought....

You double glaze and insulate walls when you live in extremely cold areas...like Alaska and other countries with extremely cold winters. Becuase there you heat your house 9 months of the year and have to prevent losing that heat through windows, walls and your ceiling.

It also helps keeping the cold outside.

Is this the SOP in Cape Town , South Africa??? Or even anywhere in South Africa?

Jirre jissis...

No...the alternative is to have an intelligent and suitable strategy.

Have you seen the price on replacing windows?

Who cares about a 20% increase when by then there will only be power for 50% of the time.

My geyser is already solar with a gas backup and I use blankets to keep warm in winter. I don't have any need to walk around barefoot in shorts during a Gauteng winter. Much cheaper than spending 10s of thousands of Rands on double glazed windows and insulation.

Go on, I am only a step away from going off grid, you are already just backup for the rainy days.

Must be an absolute blast running a business that has a monopoly, gets to do whatever it wants, start by determining required revenue, set price and gets exactly what is asked. All this while failing audits.

This increase wouldn't be that bad if only the salary can also try keep up with a similar percentage increase. Too bad most companies balk at their COE items during their budget reviews.

The work that can be done by robots or software automation will be offloaded to such solutions for a better profit margin this year.

Check out this old thread:
The biggest household electrical expense in South Africa, is NOT heating the house.

Also when there is loadshedding, you cannot heat the house in the first place.

We have a unique problem that requires going off-grid, not insulating your house against heat loss.

I am so glad we have a small inverter and PV arrays which will be even better when the LA batteries get replaced with LFP's  We also use gas for heating water and some cooking with have a wood fire place and small gas heater for winter, I just need to get the rest of the roof insulated properly.

Like I initially said...insulation AND appliances. It's a multi-faceted approach. Your 20 year old fridge IS a problem as it uses way more energy than a modern fridge does because a modern fridge is not only more efficient but it is also better insulated. And a fridge runs all day every day costing you money a modern fridge just wouldn't...

And maybe you should compare your January vs. July electricity bills again. I'd be surprised if your electricity usage didn't go up by at least 30-50% in the winter months.
