Last I checked Eskom had about 30 000 employees (could be more now). What impact would, I dont know, maby 100 expats have on their BEE number??

Also, dont people do their homework before leaving a country - such dumba$$es.........actually they might just fit right in :)
They were CAREFULLY chosen.

I'm not sure what is meant by that, but I can tell you that there's many highly experienced South African engineers working in the international power industry, and they were forced to consider this option because they don't qualify to work in the local power industry, because they're the wrong race.

Solidarity wants Eskom's affirmative action probed

Good, I bet there's a good few Eskumites cringing in their seats.

Solidarity wants Eskom's affirmative action probed

Trade union Solidarity made an urgent appeal to Eskom to provide it with a detailed account of all the foreign employees appointed there.

This comes after programme Carte Blanche revealed that several black employees had been recruited from other countries with the aim of reaching affirmative action targets at the company.

According to Eskom employees who appeared on the programme, employees were recruited from countries such as the United States to work for Eskom. Some of these employees are convinced that they were only recruited because of their skin colour and to help Eskom reach its affirmative action targets.

They also claim that if they had known that that was the reason for their recruitment they would not have accepted the offer.

In terms of a campaign launched by Eskom a few years ago, the plan was to recruit nearly 5 000 new employees over a period of five years -- about half of these had to be black women.
And zero South African white males.

I watched the show last night too. What an absolute joke. There's really no other way to describe it.

What I found REALLY interesting (and almost certainly too convenient as far as timing goes) is something I saw on TV earlier this evening. On SABC they periodically bring the up the national electricity consumption in the form of a dial. Normally, especially during the summertime, the needle sits in the green as consumption is most likely at its lowest during this time of year. Well, tonight the needle was beyond redline. At the high end of the scale there is a red zone followed by a brown end zone basically indicating serious overload and imminent blackouts to follow (LOADSHED TIME) and the needle was borderlining the brown zone. WTF?! These people must think we're all as dumb as they are.

Johannesburg - The trade union Solidarity is demanding a probe into claims that Eskom has appointed black foreigners to meet affirmative action targets.

"Some of these employees are convinced that they were only recruited because of their skin colour and to help Eskom reach its affirmative action targets," Solidarity said in a statement.

"They also claim that if they had known that that was the reason for their recruitment they would not have accepted the offer," it said.

The claims were made in a broadcast on the M-Net actuality programme, Carte Blanche.

Eskom on Monday responded that the intention of its international recruitment programme was to search for those skills that were required to meet Eskom's mandate, but were difficult to find in South Africa.

"The primary objective of the programme was to bring skilled South Africans working abroad back to South Africa, but where this was impossible, those from the rest of Africa and beyond would also be contracted," it said.

Solidarity said Eskom indicated a few years ago that it planned to recruit nearly 5 000 employees - half of them black women - over five years.

The trade union now wants Eskom to give it details of all the foreign employees it has appointed.

"South Africa has extremely capable people with years of experience at Eskom, but who have lost their jobs there since 1994," said Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans.

"By blindly chasing after targets and importing black employees simply because of their skin colour, Eskom is taking things too far. "Not only were the employees lured to the company under false pretences, but Eskom also tried to reach targets in an illegal manner by simply appointing black employees to the positions.

No wonder skilled non black people are leaving this country and Eskom is in trouble. The country is suffering but at least there are black people employed.

afaik the same thing happens in almost every sector in South Africa. We have a shortage of black doctors so rather leave the department empty than hire a white/indian doctor.

How is it possible to meet AA targets with foreigners? I was under the impression that foreigners do not qualify for AA unless they were permanent residents of SA prior to '94???

Actually it is clever not bad, foreigners i would imagine are far more educated so eskom are avoiding putting idiots in who are there just on skin colour. I may be totally off here but it seems that way to me.

That's the point; they're trying to meet their AA targets in an underhanded way.

Not like increasing productivity would be a good idea or anything >.<

If government can't make their own targets, how do they expect normal business to do it?

And irony is, AA is about "previously disadvantaged" and now bringing in a black american with a better education than even most white south africans are suddenly fulfilling this? So now we sit with say 10% unemployment, yet we rather employee outsiders than trying to reduce unemployement right here? EPIC FAIL.

...oh and then these employees just sit around and do nothing without a job description..*sigh*

At the cost of white South Africans because the only thing that matters to government is skin colour

Exactly. Eskom does not benefit in terms of AA targets by hiring foreigners regardless of their color.

If you saw the show you would see that these 'professionals' were ripped off with their housing & car allowances and many say are not doing much work. In fact they were not even given job descriptions (illegal).

If such claims existed, Solidarity should report Eskom for contravening Employment Equity Act because foreigners are excluded from the "designated groups" and they do not count in AA numerical goals.
