Eskom is again taking the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) to court, this time for "mistakes" and "financially impossible" conclusions that the regulator reached in determining Eskom's tariff increase for 2022/23.

In February, Nersa awarded Eskom a 9.6% tariff increase, far below the 20.5% requested.

Nersa released the detailed reasons for its decision last month. On examining the document, Eskom CFO Calib Cassim said that he found Nersa's reasoning deeply flawed and it could not be left unchallenged.

Eskom has taken Nersa's decisions on review on numerous occasions over the last three years and won each time. Each time that Eskom overturns a tariff decision in its favour, it can add the increases it has foregone to tariffs for future years.

Nersa determines the electricity tariff based on a formula that takes account of costs that the company will incur in producing energy – such as primary energy costs and labour - as well as a reasonable return on its assets. The return on assets, which is based on the value of its power stations, less depreciation, is particularly key as it enables Eskom to charge tariffs that are more reflective of its operational costs and also takes account of the need for new investment.

Geez, but Eskom really have no issue with people's hardships, struggling and declining economy or the poor. Just as long as they can milk citizens dry, they are happy.

I hope Eskom get a solid 30% increase so that going entirely off grid will be a no brainer for everyone. Screw the dumb and poor who keep voting for the ANC. They created this mess in the first place. Economics doesn't care about skin colour.

What about the people who can't afford to go off grid? It's not a cheap thing to do. If it was I would be off grid already.

The fact that you make this statement shows how uninformed you are. The majority of people in this country don't have the means and/or even the space. You realise not everyone just lives out in the suburbs right?

What then? We should all equally be in darkness?

Nersa seems to be staffed by incompetent deployed ANC cadres. Thank you ANC.

Are these the same majority who keep voting for the ANC who keeps grinding SOEs like Eskom into the ground?
At some point the majority need to accept responsibility for having voted for a criminal party hellbent on destroying the country.

We wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place if the ANC had listened to the Eskom advisors telling them that new generation capacity was going to be needed. Whoever sides with the ANC deserves what they get and it's a bit unfortunate about the colateral damage.

Solar financing options are available and if you can afford GTIs, AMGs, etc. outside your shack then you likely can afford solar if you put your mind to it.
Priorities and choices.

Careful for what you wish for, because you might just get it. They will likely get the solar panels, inverters and batteries the same way they got the GTIs, AMGs etc.

Modelled on the SABC TV license, all devices capable of displaying video / pichuz must be taxed with SABC TV license. And anything that moves must pay mobility tax, if you can move it, then pay it.

And private criminal prosecutions: If you even think about private litigation, that thought must pay tax. Initiate a private prosecutor, pay lots of fees and tax.

And Eskom: If it works with electrickery, then you must pay Eskom Tax. Regardless of where it's generated.

Same with Prasa and SAA: Everything that moves must be taxed. All vehicle owners must pay a special tax to SAA. All truckers and taxi-drivers should pay SAA tax too. Hell, if you buy a pair of shoes, pay the SAA tax. Even children in walking rings must pay SAA tax.

If you buy a knife / stick for self-defence, pay your SAPS firearm license fee, it's the right thing to do.

If your kids attend private schooling (because the shooling is so fsckd up), the you must pay the township school a levy.

Lekker communism, lekker ANC!

I wouldn't mind paying a 50% increase on the price of electricity tomorrow, if, and only if, Eskom can guarantee me an uninterruptable power source starting tomorrow. If, for any reason my power goes down after that increase then I should have the right to sue the living **** out of them for damages caused due to outages.

But we all know that will never happen. They want all the reward with no repercussions, you pay even though we can't guarantee power. The same goes for everything else we pay for with our taxes, we demand that you pay us every month without fail but we do not have to provide anything in return.

This is the reason why they're so hell bent on stopping privatization, can't have a company provide a basic necessity and cut people off for not paying...
