Residents of the City pay an expensive premium, for what should a basic right, but have been elevated to an expensive privilege.

Since I am/was paying for that privilege: When I stayed in the Township, I ensured all the potholes were fixed and streetlights were working by emailing the politicians.

Yeah, I'm fortunate - I live in a suburb where when stuff breaks and you complain it does get attended to.

Never underestimate the pester power of retired people (not me, but most of the other residents) with nothing to do but hound the elected and paid local officials when they neglect to fix stuff.

I am fortunate that I don't live in Gugs, Khaya, Delft or one of the other townships where **** doesn't get fixed quickly (or sometimes at all) for reasons that range from complex (and understandable) to inexcusable.

That said, I grew up in Elsies River and Athlone, and, by and large, you get the service you vote for here Cape Town...
