IN THE midst of load-shedding and high electricity prices, national energy utility Eskom is looking at alternative sources of energy to power its offices.

Solar panels are being put up at Sunilaws Office Park in Beacon Bay.

Eskom’s Lyndon Collins said the installation of energy-efficient equipment and alternative powergenerating equipment was nothing new.

In fact, it was part of Eskom’s national energy-efficiency internal strategy.

“This year, Eskom has identified Eskom buildings across different provinces to be used for the installation of photovoltaic panels that will generate electricity through solar energy.”

Collins said Eskom Renewable was installing 534 solar panels at the East London office park using a company called Beda Elements JV.

The panels would generate 165 kilowatts, “a quarter of the building’s consumption”.

“This is part of reducing the building’s electricity bill, and contributing to the reduction of Eskom’s carbon footprint, thereby reducing demand from the national grid.”

Collins said the project had taken three months and was set to be commissioned early this month.

Eskom started doing this ages ago. Not sure why it's only making news now.

That's kinda bad/insultive considering Eskom is responsible for load shedding in the first place. They should be the first to suffer from their mistakes.

Yet government still doesn't offer any incentives for photovoltaic installations.

I don't hold the most popular view and will get stoned, but perhaps they are trying to lead by example? They are continually asking everyone to keep grid usage to a minimum and perhaps they are just practicing what they preach?

As much as I hate the situation we are in as much as anyone, I feel very sorry for that poor lot over at Eskom, this crisis is the result of our divine overlords... the ANC. Eskom, just like everything else the ANC touched, turned to snot because they forced ill decisions onto them and probably left those who were not in-cahoot deployed cadres with very little power to make the right decisions. A lot of the executive there are only there since a short while ago because the clowns jumped ship, so they are barely the cause of any of this and are probably trying their best to turn this around with what they have left from all the crap their predecessors caused.

I also feel sorry for the employees, because from the level just below the executive, they had no control or influence on this and has to go to work everyday to put food on the table... and they must do that while working at, what is probably, the most hated company in South Africa at the moment. Can't be very encouraging.

A company that does not use their own product and urges everyone not to use to much of their product... FAIL
