Eskom launches online portal for viewing power data

Eskom has launched a new portal where South Africans can view the system status and other related data.

This follows requests from OUTA to Eskom to make its power system performance information publicly available in a user-friendly form.

OUTA said it has spent months trying to get this information. “Eskom initially delayed responding, then refused our request,” it said.

They are using PowerBI so no reason it needs to look like it was built in the 90s.

Lower demand earlier in the day, a lull during lunchtime, and peak demand at night during Netflix time.

Given that they had available capacity on 5 & 6 September, why did we have load shedding?

This is really minimal effort on Eskoms part after 3 months.
Slightly worse than useless, but better than nothing - i.e. typical SOE effort.

It would be better for them to give a raw data feed so we can make our own pretty graphs (grafana...)

Those are 'instantaneous' charts, and do not include anticipated peak demand in the evenings. This is particularly important when pumped storage has been depleted, and there are no diesel supplies.

Electricity dispatchers must have a margin of at least 1GW to safely maintain the grid. This means that load shedding is still needed until the reserves have been topped up.

As @lsheed_cn indicates, these numbers are only a tiny fraction of the big picture...
