“We therefore urge all our customers to use electricity efficiently and keep air coolers at 23 degrees,” Eskom said.

In the best British accent possible: "Sod off"

The power from Cahora Bassa in Mozambique travels on a high voltage direct current (HVDC) line. This can't be delivered directly onto the grid and must run through a cluster of large inverters which are located in Midrand. These convert the power to AC which can then be delivered into the rest of the AC grid. It looks like it was one of the inverters that failed.

And special equipment and trained personnel is needed to work on HVDC lines...

Didn't know it is HVDC...

What do they mean "lost"?

Was it used or dissipated into the air or what?

Why not try and read the first 3 lines of the article?

In fact you dont even have to do that, you just need to read one line in the OP

Eskom has lost approximately 220MW of electricity imports from Mozambique because of a technical fault.

You can tell it is the DC line from Mozambique as it is a single strand hanging from a long insulator (rather than the 3 live wires and neutral running together)

I'm not a fan of Koeberg but I'm glad #2 will be up again this week in case of other failures. The tourists and swallows are already starting to flood into Cape Town

Question is - will we be load shed or not ? 220MW "lost" and 930 MW of capacity to be gained when Unit 2 of Koeberg due to be synchronised back into the grid today. wil we make it? Also 5 days to repair, will they make it on schedule?

Megawatts is a power rating, not an energy rating.
It just means that that power is not available, not that energy was lost

Yeah, got that. I'm saying, Midrand?:) Thats one hell of a travel from Mozambique before getting on the grid. I would have thought we'd have this sort of infrastructure closer to boarders etc
