Eskom may target electricity thieves, non-payers during

They're in such a bad position, running everything on the limit, using backup generators for primary supply, yet they have this wad of stolen power just sitting there, waiting to be cut and absorbed back into the grid.

Eskom’s current shedding schedules have been created on an equitable basis to ensure all customers are treated fairly. This may change.
If someone is consisting making use of your product for which you charge a fee and they do not pay they are not customers. The use of this word demonstrates the wrong attitude.

My main concern is that if someone is a legitimate customer of Eskom (i.e. pays his/her electrictiy bill each month) but happens to live in an area like Soweto he/she is going to be smashed by load shedding unfairly.

... however there must be something that can be done about all the illegal connections in the townships, just needs local government to grow a set and stick to their guns - unlike the way the PE municipality backtracked iro of Walmer township.

A valid concern, but as it stands currently, areas where most do pay are also affected by loadshedding, which is also unfair to those residents, who might see shorter loadshedding periods if this is implemented.

I honestly don't see a way of stopping these people that is fair to all involved.

Area-wide blackouts are obviously unfair as some people do pay.

Going in and manually disconnecting the illegal and non-paying connections on an individual basis is not only expensive (got to hire and pay all that manpower to do it as well as security personnel to keep those disconnectors from being assaulted) but it is inefficient as pretty quickly the illegal connections will simply be reconnected meaning disconnection sorties need to be extremely frequent to see any real result in the grid.

Instead of just trying to disconnect illegal connections, they should first send a massive power spike through the illegal connection, blowing whatever electronics are on the other end. Then disconnect them. The thieves would then have less incentive to reconnect illegally, since a) They no longer have a working TV, and b) if they acquire a new one, it runs the same risk of being blown.

It is up to the legal residents to report illegal connections. From the pictures it should be quite obvious to them who is stealing but obviously they don't care enough. However if they get cut off they will make an effort.

There is a massive problem of complacency in these areas. If I found out my neighbour was stealing electricity, specifically electricity that I have paid for, then I would report them immediately.

I would bet a fair portion of the people know who is stealing electricity and don't report it.

Good idea. Doesn't fit our PC world though

Fortunately one party regarding another party as being in contravention of an agreement does not give that first party the right to deliberately destroy the second party's property.

Imagine if some dude lost your payment confirmation one month and then charged into your home and beat your TV to death with a baseball bat in retaliation. LOL what a world. :p

“This idea is on the cards, but still needs detailed evaluations to be carried out before it can be implemented or rejected.”

NOW they wanna start doing their impact studies? Why not before the decision to cut on maintenance instead?

Eskom has teh dumb.

Every household and business need prepaid meters installed problem will be solved. Monitor the areas if X amount should be used and you get Z amount then investigators should go investigate the areas. Only way you will combat this. If Z amount is high cut the power off of that area for a few days and tell them due to cable theft or something. That way you can find the source and offer rewards... when money talks the community will come forward, once disconnected every week or second week send investigators.

"Eskom may target electricity thieves"

Hold on, so you telling me you didnt before or dont do it now? Hey Guys we can all start to steal electricity, eskom might do something about it.

We pay our bill on-time and everytime. We now received a letter saying our power will be cut for non-payment. 2 Things here worth mentioning.

1. The municipality doesnt know how to recon accounts.
2. All the squatter camps here near Harties have millions of illegal connections. Not only have I seen them Ive had to drive over them.

So now we as law abiding residents are going to have our power cut because the superior homosapiens cant recon our account. But dare not touch those illegal connections in the squatter camps. No no, we leave those.

Eskom MAY. Not will. In other words, they are just considering it. Cannot make this sht up.
