Amnesty for illegal electricity users with prepaid meters in South Africa

Eskom is encouraging the remaining 1.7 million prepaid electricity customers with illegal connections to come forward and update their meters to Key Revision Number (KRN) 2 by Friday, 13 December 2024.

This comes after the power utility reported that 400,000 "zero buyers" — users who consume but do not pay for electricity — have become paying customers because of the KRN rollover project.

So there were 2.1m zero users. 400k is a good effort and will boost Eskom's revenue. The zero users will never come down to none, but 1/2 to 2/3 of them would help

My UK cousin told me a fellow in their street was prosecuted for tampering with the meter. He was discovered when some maintenance had to be done on cables and all houses had to be inspected for potential loads. He got a £3500 fine and received a £4250 bill back dated for when they estimated he had gippo'd the meter

The problem I have with this is that if they start getting more revenue in, THEY WILL STILL PUSH FOR A CRIPPLING INCREASE

Still looks more like once off buyers to me, I don't get why someone who wasn't buying would suddenly be a buyer because of KRN, they bought for the sake of the KRN change, and will go back to their default settings, unless the holy spirit has come over them and they saw the error of their ways.

What a fcken disgrace if a government ANC pissing all over legit people. The same people keeping the Economy alive. But give the people destroying everything and the cause of crime a freebie.
Of course, they won't give you a fscking cent in a business loan, when you really need it to get your small garage company to transition from working in the garage to moving into a small factory, but will fall over themselves to loan money to known bad government entities that suddenly "turned around" after an election.

Yes, South African banks.... F0K JULLE ALMAL

I still don't understand what happens if non buyers simply ignore this migration.
Looks like the load reduction thing is starting to have an effect and some people are no longer finding it sustainable.

The best thing to do if the problem doesn't get better is just to intensify it.

I thought one of the benefits of the KRN change is all the old token generation machines that got stolen/leaked will no longer work.
If you don't update the KRN the meter essentially gets bricked, you can't use blackmarket or legitimately bought tokens.

Yes, it literally removes ghost vendors from the system, so Eskom might get a few customers, but it still doesn't take care of crowd that bypassed the meters, which I assume would be in the majority.

That is why I am taking the 400k new buying customers with a pinch of salt. Eskom will still need to load reduct the lot into submission until they have at least 70% consistent buying population, then they can consider this a success.

Nah I think the 400k new customers is a legit number. They won't be repeat customers though, they just did it to get the KRN update thats it.

the vast majority of those meters will be bypassed again already.

But regardless of this, this idea of "amnesty" for issues like this is something we need to stop in this country.

My suspicion is that there's meters in the system that haven't had tokens bought for them in a VERY LONG time. Some of them are likely destroyed which happens, but I suspect most of them have been bypassed, so this is an audit of sorts

Not entirely on topic but one of @champy's heroes is coming out swinging, although not much coverage; @champy may say it is old news with his inside track:

"South African Engineer Matshela Koko has released a dossier, which reveals massive State Capture 2.0 that is playing in court papers involving the Special Investigations Unit, Eskom, and a multinational company trading as HKA. Below reads the document:

Binnington Copeland and Associates (Pty) Ltd caught up in State Capture 2.0
