Eskom offering amnesty to illegal electricity users who come forward

I personally know a fellow in a block of flats 10 mins away who showed me his "neat" meter bypass. He chiseled away the wall behind the meter and soldered links between IN and OUT. He took off the lead seal and wire and remounted it on the wall after replacing the terminal cover

This was in 2019. I saw him at PnP Family Store in June and asked him if his efforts had been detected. He proudly told me that an inspector had called but he did not answer the door. They never followed it up

No, the meter does not get bricked. It just won't accept tokens until it gets the "upgrade". The lies around all of this told to the public by the authorities are and will all come out sooner or later.

If as another (or maybe it is this article) stated, Eskom and some municipalities have ALL the codes available for every single meter. It just needs to be loaded into the meters by someone. Either the customer or an Eskom or Municipal employee.

Another pack of lies told to all from start to finish.
There are scenarios where if the mains are off due to lack of credit you might struggle to recode on the client interface which won't be powered and the 9v battery backup is a struggle even entering one code.

There was no successful roll-out of smart meters with communications as the ANC and P03SKOM blocked any/all proposals/tenders back in the 2000s already, or rather, it was all above their heads
Correct. As far back as 2009 they had a supplier for smart meters lined up, then did a 180 and decided to go with split meters courtesy of a Chinese-backed, but African branded supplier.

Had they gone with the truly "smart" meter back then this KRN upgrade could have been done remotely through the backend system. Not only that but the load limiting per meter (e.g. drop from 60A to 10A) during low capacity periods would have been possible too, at least allowing people to have some power during load shedding.

Cadres have to eat

This is b.s. You don't accidentally not buy electricity for 5 years.

SARS doesn't treat genuine mistakes made in their horrendously complex tax code with kid gloves. They fine the **** out of you. Same should go for these cretins.

They should get criminally prosecuted for their actions. If they plead guilty, they can get a suspended sentence.
The devil is in the details here.

Included in the "zero buyers" are customers that, according to Eskom's systems, have no purchases against their name only because they are linked to meters that are no longer installed.

e.g. Your meter breaks, Eskom installs a new one but fails to unlink the old meter and link the new one in the system. You are seen as a "live" customer, but your purchases (on the new meter) are not allocated to your account.

Both good and bad. Good because it sorted out the upgrade problem. BAD really bad because it allows the govt to DECIDE how much power individuals will be allowed to use and when.

The fancy name is "curtailment", which is nothing but rationing - something associated with war conditions. Now used to cover failures to supply sufficient power to the population of a country! There is NOTHING good about smart meters in the long run nothing.

Still looks more like once off buyers to me, I don't get why someone who wasn't buying would suddenly be a buyer because of KRN, they bought for the sake of the KRN change, and will go back to their default settings, unless the holy spirit has come over them and they saw the error of their ways.

Thats what I thought initially, but I think the ones who are updating are not bypassing the meter entirely, I think they are the ones who are dribbling the meter to show less consumption than actually is. Still though, I dont understand why they would necessarily be new users?

Yeah, some of them are the "pay R100 and get 1000 units" gang. They will get something but getting someone who think electricity should be R150 a month for uncapped usage to actually be committed to paying for what they use is not going to be easy.

But it's baby steps though, Even getting here is a massive achievement with Soweto, Eskom shouldn't let up though, load reduct them into submission, they will finally come around.

The syndicates will first have to steal some KRN2 generating devices, it will take a while.

I guess those meters in Soweto should'nt be called "pre-paid" anymore
