Is there such thing as off-peak and peak electricity rates in South Africa? I heard someone said that even the prepaid meters operate at different rates between day and night. How is that possible because if I buy 100kW/h of electricity units that should mean that I am able to use appliances that uses 100kW for exactly one hour, whether it's during the day or night?

How does Eskom differentiate electricity consumption or usage during summer and winter? Please be more explicit.

Let's say I buy 500kW/h of prepaid electricity in Summer that I am going to use it in Winter, how will I pay more during winter?

Oh prepaid. No, then you won't pay more... But you will get klapped on the sliding usage scale when you buy it won't you?

It's definitely higher. I bought R100 electricity this week for my flat and I received a measly 6kW more than R50 two weeks ago. I was stunned.

Not sure on the prepaid front, will see if I can find out (cos it'd be interesting) but there are definitely peak and off-peak rates for normal usage.

AFAIK they're not time based though and it usually only applies to larger consumers (think: factories, manufacturers, smelters) who are often charged at whatever rate their usage peaks at.

I'm not sure, I haven't followed the news about it. I'm new to the whole prepaid meter thing :p I just know my Geyser munches the hell out of my prepaid meter and I switch it on for 2 hours rather each day, than whole day.

So if you buy a R200 token you get less than for 2 R100 tokens? Think we'll pass on prepaid then...

I get 50 units free on prepaid every month, so only buy R50's electricity.

U survive on R50 electricity?! How!

Haha...I use about 80 units a month for my apartment.

Im quite strict on switching lights, pcs, etc off if not being used.

Works for me.
